I'm looking for some kind of online utility that helps plan an efficient route. For example, I love to use Google maps, but that will simply give me directions in the order I put in the addresses. This obviously leads to a great deal of backtracking. Is there any similar service that allows you to enter a start point and then all the addresses, and then plot the most efficient route to hit them all? Thanks!
Well, I've found several references (including a facebook app) to http://www.myvirtuoo.com/route.html which is supposed to do exactly that. Unfortunately the site is down, and I don't know if it's temporary or permanent.
http://www.tbhse.com/ has one, but it appears to only be used for mapping between properties in the MLS real estate listings.
I believe some GPS units may offer this option (the Garmin Nuvi 700 series are the ones that I've seen this specifically mentioned for).

You can add waypoints in google maps by dragging the route to a new place.. a pop-up shows the exact adress.. it's not perfect, but it's better than most online maps.
I'm afraid to say that's commonly accepted to be an intractable problem. If you do find an efficient way of finding the optimum route, then congratulations! You've revolutionised algorthms
