The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
We're doing a small project between 3 people. We just basically need a todo list that can save/read from a network source (we're not in the same physical location).
Basically something were we can add:
"Trash needs to be taken out"
Then "Tim" can take owernship of it, and update the process. Other's can put comments in there like "you split garbage all over the back steps"
If your needs are that simple, why don't you just sign up for one of the multitudinous free Wikis out there and create a little structure for yourself?
What you're describing is also more like an issue tracker than a project management system. Assembla offers free Trac hosting. It's supposed to be for open-source software projects, but you could use it as a personal issue tracker I suppose. The caveat is that the free version is publicly browseable.
So long as it's that basic you could just make google docs or google calendar do that. I mean, in very basic terms. You could create a spread sheet in google docs with Task, Date, Time, Notes or something suitable to that effect and then share it amongst your team.
It's not super efficient customised project management/issue tracking software but it woud get the job done for free so long as you developed a logical method for using and applying it to your project.

And it looks like they still let you sign up for a trial, so there is that.

Alternatively, there are lists of free online project management systems (not all of which are actually free anymore) online.
