I am running a new Vista computer with a Core 2 Duo 6400. Recently, it has been rather slow, compared with its usual zippiness. Task manager gives both cores to often be at 100%, especially when doing something like dragging a window around. The task manager's "Processes" tabshows no program hogging CPU time (the sum of the CPU column is always less than 100%, even when the "Performance" tab gives it at 100%). When idling, the computer uses about 13% CPU usage - too high.
Earlier today, I did my usual windowskey-L to lock and did something, and when I came back, the computer was off. Booting it up went to the "do ya want to boot in safe mode?" screen. Ever since, the slowdowns have happened.
The problem goes away in safe mode. I have very few startup programs, and none installed very recently. The only unusual program I ran today was SpaceMonger (an old version), but that shouldn't affect anything.

That's pretty strange, unless you haven't checked the "show processes from all users" at the bottom.
I would guess it's some system service, or buggy drivers (I believe both, catalysts and forceware, are in beta still?).

Hmm... I am now showing processes from all users, but still nothing hugely abnormal - other than the task manager taking up 35%. I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling my beta Forceware drivers.
Christ. I did the "upgrade install" (as no repair install was available), again deleted drivers, scaned for viruses/spyware, uninstalled startup programs ... and nothing. Next stop, format.
