I have been looking for a strategy game for a while that is multiplayer as well as turn based (since the person I am playing with is far better at any and all games than I am and I feel like with a turn based game I can at least have a slight advantage). We aren't looking for anything extremely complicated, just something we can jump straight into. Does anyone have any suggestions or would like to share some stories about their favorite strategy games?

A little more detail, such as what kind of setting you are looking for, as in historical, sci fi, fantasy would help.
Civ IV is a good catchall. It can be as deep as you want, but it's also very much a pick up and play kind of game. There are also very good mods out there that can drastically change the settings and gameplay.

Look, don't lie to the man.
It is one of those "just one more turn" games.
Well, I meant pick up and play as in it's easy to learn to play as opposed to some kind of John Tiller style historical wargame that requires a commitment in just learning how to navigate the interface and understand the options and choices that you are looking at.

Its the kind of game you load up on Saturday morning to waste 10 minutes before running out to mow the yard, only to find out that the next time you look at the clock its 9pm, Sunday
Seconded. Before you go out and buy anything (or in this case, 2 of anything) give this a try. Its a great little turn-based strategy game with some depth without being too complicated, balance without blandness, and enjoyable single-player missions to boot.
For some reason I can't force myself to get over the horrible graphics in wesnoth. And I play dwarf fortress and NES/SNES games regularly. It's just.... ugly.
Fallout Tactics had a multiplayer mode. Squad level gameplay, both players pick their teams and have at it in turn based combat. You can also play in real time.
The game's available from GOG.com for pretty cheap. Can't say how well the actual multiplayer plays out since I never got around to trying it. Judging from the gameplay in the singleplayer campaign though, I'd think it would probably be pretty fun. Someone else here might be able to give you a better insight.

Buggy as hell. The multiplayer demo was fun, but the full game's multiplayer had so many issues, even after all the patches. The game had no method of detecting when a player was out of sync, even in a 2 player match, and that happens frequently in turn-based multi. Also, it was possible for someone to spawn on the top of a building, yet if they didn't have a 100% human team there was a chance some characters would be permanently stuck up there. I'm not sure if it was deathclaws or super mutants that couldn't handle ladders, but I know dogs definitely couldn't.
On another note, did Empire: Total War ever get the multiplayer campaign patch? If so, I'd definitely recommend that.

I'm not sure I've heard that accusation before.
Looks fine to me.
Yeah, I always thought Wesnoth's graphics were fine (impressive even, when you consider it is an open source game).
Anyone notice how some things (mattresses and the copy machines in Highrise) are totally impenetrable? A steel wall, yeah that makes sense, but bullets should obliterate copy machines.
I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.

I don't know.. I can't put my finger on it.. there is just something about that is visually jarring to me that keeps me from playing it more than a few minutes and unintalling.
How about Sword of the Stars, it's turn based with real time fleet combat. Go with the ultimate edition with all the expansions if you do get it.
And we still do PA multiplayer games ever so often. Did one today and yesterday in fact.
My other favorite strategy game right now is dominions 3. Mostly play that with the goons at SA though, as there doesn't seem to be many people playing it around here.

Don't like hex based games?
By the way, just being nit picky, but Dwarf Fortress doesn't have graphics per se, not anymore then a book does.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (Don't listen to what people say about 5, 3 is the big boss)
i lost more time to this game than i care to admit
I never knew people liked 5 more than 3. 3 is incredible.
Maybe he meant 2.
Because 2 is better than 3
While both are excellent games, and available on GoG, I must agree that II is superior. It has a greater sense of character (the hand drawn graphics are just fantastic) and the music gets my vote for best in series. Both are great for LAN play - though III has more content (all expansions) if that's what you're looking for. Also, if you do end up getting II, I wouldn't recommend installing the expansion as it changes all the music to what I feel are inferior tracks.

That is a ridiculous statement. It uses characters to represent structures. That's like saying television doesn't have graphics either, it's just a bunch of pixels.
It may be the hex, the persepective just seems.... wrong especially buildings. Shrug. Fallouts were hex werent they? Didn't have any problem with that.

5 fully patched and/or Tribes of the East is much better than 3 gameplay wise. The skill system is a hell of a lot better. A bunch of skills in heroes3 suck dick and are completely worthless (Eagle Eye anyone). I also think that the race balance is a bit better. Heroes5 is really a refined heroes3, it suffers from some performance issues, but I think it is the better game. If you can get Tribes of the East expansion (it is a stand alone game too), get that I would say. Otherwise if you do get Heroes3, get the In the Wake of Gods fan mod, turns heroes3 into a much much better game and more fun overall.

Huh.. While Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3 are really amazing and I poured days after days into these games, I don't see all the hate on 5. It went back to its roots after the departure that was 4. It's like Heroes 3 with awesome graphics. I recommend 5. It's sexcellent.

I made a Dominions thread once to get people to play. All I got was one dude who stumbled through it and did terribly because he pirated the game and didn't know what was what.

It's the poached art that turned me off.
Poached? Do tell.
It's an open-source game that gets art assets from whoever feels like contributing to the project. There was some ripped art in there, but I'm pretty sure that Wesnoth doesn't anymore. Even if it does, I know there's a lot of effort being put into improving currents sprites and making new ones.

Open source projects just weird me out because there's stuff by different artists right next to each other and it just jars.

Yeah you actually need the manual to that game. I keep it handy while playing (mostly so I can remember magic item crafting requirements)

if you've got Oxbox(es) there's Dai Senryaku XII which I still see around eb/gamestop for like $10 which is essentially a much larger scope version of advance wars.
there's a similar game on steam called Shattered Union. it was another that I played and seem to remember enjoying on the oxbox. It's much smaller scope but much easier to get into because of it.
Also, Laser Squad Nemesis has hotseat and PBEM multiplayer, and will run on pretty much anything. In case you don't know it's an X-com 'clone' that's made by the ex-x-com lead developer, Julian Gollop.

You'll like this; it's free. We've had threads about it before, and it's well liked.
