Movies to watch with gf

Hi, so I'm in a long distance relationship with my girlfriend and we try to have a movie night every week. Though now we have been doing this for about a year now and we need some suggestions for good movies to watch that maybe aren't as well known or the usual favorites.

So any suggestions would be great, we are looking at this a an opportunity to broaden our range of movies we watch as well.

Thanks HA!

Not sure if these wouldn't be considered "the ususal favorites", but they're great movies, and great to watch with your girlfriend.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    Garden State
    Lost in Translation
    Stranger than Fiction
    High Fidelity

I've recommended this a few times, but I doubt anyone has ever taken me up on it: The White Dragon. It's a Chinese kung-fu drama/comedy with loads of charm.

Wicker Park. It has become our favorite movie to watch together. So good. So good.

edit: Also it's about a couple being apart from each other so I think it fits the bill perfectly

Love Actually, British Rom Com that focuses on 4-5 groups of people all around Christmas.

Stars Hugh Grant as the Prime Minister, Bill Nighy as a past his prime singer with a christmas album, Liam Neeson, and Kiera Knightley. Really funny movie that I didn't think I'd enjoy but it was worth it.

Love Me If You Dare -- I won't be able to get away without saying it's a weird movie, but it is a great movie. It's a French film that mixes a little (dark-esque?) comedy and romance.

    Roman Holiday
    King Of Hearts
    A Very Long Engagement
    The Thin Man
    Charade
    In The Mood For Love
    Chung King Express
    Breathless

Some of those are English titles of French films. They're all fairly romantic.

I still recommend Pleasantville to anyone who hasn't seen it. Something about that movie really strikes a chord, and at the time it came out (1998) the visual effects were considered phenomenal. They're actually still considered to be pretty impressive.

Don't know if it particularly fits the category, but Lars and the Real Girl is a brilliantly weird romance/comedy/drama.

Also Half Nelson because Ryan Gosling is awesome.

Old school (Very know but likely depending on age):
    Some like it hot
    Casablanca
    Anything with James Dean

    Semi-old:
    Most things Tom Hanks
    Most things Clint Eastwood

    Intellectual/foreign:
    Europa (Lars von Trier)
    Cinema Paradiso
    Anything by Pedro Almodovar
The original version of "Nikita" and "Insomnia"
    Being John Malkovich

    Odd but great:
Bollywood movies (Yes - ALL OF THEM)
Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton movies.
Nature/science/exploration movies. Relaxing, often beautiful and fascinating.

Also not movies but TV-series. Most anything English you can get at like the original "The Office" and all things crime related as Sherlock Holmes, Rebus, Morse... plus of course Coupling (again not the US remake).

If you're in a long distance relationship and just can't be together then I suspect Brokeback Mountain will be a movie that will resonate.

What have you guys seen and liked? I mean personally I hated most of the movies mentioned in this thread. Some direction would be nice. Also, get Netflix, it could really help with finding movies and the streaming Watch Instantly will be good for last minute move nights.

to my surprise I found that 'Full Metal Jacket' is something every woman I had in my condo wanted to finish when I showed her the first scene.

I'm gonna second A Very Long Engagement, that's a fantastic movie

any of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's movies are great but that's the only one besides Amelie that is really romantically focused

however, if you've seen it/if you do see it and you like it, be sure to check out Delicatessen and City of Lost Children

Third vote for 'Once' (unless I missed someone's recommendation). Also, for atypical romantic movies, can't go wrong with 'WALL-E' or 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' (people always think I'm joking when I say CTHD is one of the most romantic movies I know, but it really is...) or 'Brokeback Mountain' (your mileage may seriously vary with this last recommendation; use your own judgment). If you're feeling some action/suspense, then 'No Country for Old Men' rocks as do a lot of old Hitchcocks ('To Catch a Thief' or 'Rear Window' spring to mind).

What are some of your girl's favorite movies? That'll give us something to go on...

Well there have been some good suggestions so far but as asked I will say some that we have enjoyed in the past.

She is not into chick flicks all that much but we are willing to give them a go if they come well recommended.

Movies/shows we have seen and liked:

    Hot Fuzz
    Snatch
    Transformers
    House
    Full metal alchemist
    Princess Bride
    Office Space
    Life Aquatic
    Royal Tenenbaums
    Burn Notice
    007 Casino Royal(new one)
    Battlestar Galactica
    Disney Movies (wall-e especially)
    etc...

posted shows cause those are also welcome suggestions.

Again thanks for all the suggestions so far

I'd have to second Science of Sleep. Actually, pretty much anything that Michel Gondry has done. His movies just have this charm to them, not overly sappy romcom's by any stretch of the imagination.

Ugh, I couldn't stand Science of Sleep.

Lost, on the other hand, is a show you should definitely watch!

    Also:
    Weeds
    Breaking Bad
How I Met Your Mother (if you like sitcoms)
    Psych
    Firefly (and then Serenity)

Also: It's worth noting that Battlestar Galactica is getting a new movie called Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, it releases October 27th. Don't know if you already knew about that.
