So I just played this game, Half-Life 2, you may have heard of it
So, I read the Wiki regarding the general Half-Life plot so far, and I've gotta say that knowing Freeman was in stasis for the 20 years between HL and HL2 bugs me. It bugs me because everyone in HL2 assumes he knows what's going on, and is hardly surprised at how young Gordan has managed to stay. Let alone, "WHAT THE FUCK MAN ITS BEEN 20 YEARS" kind of comments.
It's supposed to bug you, seeing as it's a plot point.
It's implied that Eli contracted Gordon's services from G-Man, which is why everyone is expecting him at the beginning of the game.
Also keep in mind that there's a lot of dark humor in the half-life series. Gordon not knowing fuck-all about what's going on despite his messianic stature among the resistance is part of that. It also plays into the theme of the game at large. You suck, more or less. You are the pawn of some dude that you don't even know, and you're running down the blood path that's been set before you for no reason beyond the fact that it's been set before you.
Apparently they tossed out a bunch of ideas for enemies in Half-Life 2. When you're in the Citadel at the end of the game, being given that impromptu tour of the facility, you go over some four-legged synthetics that were never in the game or Episode 1 or 2. It's like an entire production line of them.
There's another unused synth on the production lines with those as well. It's kind of a floating pyramid thing. There's loads of stuff that was cut from the game, though. There's a jar in Eli's lab with a rock looking thing in it. That's the head of an enemy called the creamator, which had an acid spewing weapon reminiscent of a flamethrower. They were intended to be a cleanup crew dispatched to remove remains when civil protection had to make examples. Then there's the hydra, which was a mass of blue tentacles that you may have seen in some of the early videos. That got cut due to being no fun to fight. There's also a lot of things that never even got developed, like the ant lion king.
I honestly forgot ALL about the Episodic content, and I've never played 1 or 2... I suck right?
I've got the orange box so I guess I better get right on that... think I can finish both episodes if I marathon it, before morning?
When is Valve going to get off their ass and bring back Adrian Shepard?
Yeah yeah, Gearbox character. Who gives a shit? Give him some closure. Either bring him back as a Combine supersoldier or the new pawn of the G-Man now that he's lost Gordon to the V-gaunts.
Half-Life 2: Episode 3 has been delayed while they work on Half-Life 2: Counter-Contingency, in which Adrian Shepard is brought out of stasis by the G-Man and sent after Gordon Freeman. Enjoy playing through a game as long as Half-Life 2 and its first two Episodes, but from another perspective.
This news is fake.
I know because the title is not a science pun.
That was the working title. The shipping title is Half-Life 2: External Force.
Valve has promised that the events in External Force will "set into motion" important plot points that will be explored fully in Half-Life: Episode 3.

Gearbox just recently mouthed off about steam, as if they were very unhappy with Valve. Do they still...own the Adrian character and opforce properties? Or can Valve continue that story if they want?

What were they bothered by? After an initial awkward meeting I have fallen madly in love with the platform.

Man. You guys need to step up your game.
Actually it's all true, but they cancelled the game due to the fact that by following Freeman, Shepard never actually met any enemies, because Freeman already killed them all. It was just a 20hr trek without any ammo, enemies, guns or puzzles. And it's that long because Shepard needs to do that on foot. The Obsidian CEO tried it and took 200hr, though, because he got lost in the train station. He is very meticulous.
So after seeing this thread I decided it was about time that I played through the whole thing again, as I haven't touched any of the HL games for some time. I'm currently in the blast silo with the giant tentacles from the first game and I'm really impressed at how well it holds up for a game that's almost 11 years old. Granted, the graphics don't look like much now, but the atmosphere that's created is unparalleled by any other game from it's time.
Anyway, the thing is I don't own any of the expansion packs for the first game. Are they worth the £6 that they cost on steam, or am I not missing out on much?

That's odd. Activating any HL1 code on Steam should automatically grant you HL GOTY edition, which includes all of its expansions.
Well, IIRC, I got it bundled with HL2 and HL2:E1. I think it was the holiday edition, but I got it ages ago so I could be wrong. Anyway, I got HL:Source and Deathmatch:source with it, but no expansion packs.

I don't think killzone was out at the time...
Hmm. Good point. I completely forgot how old HL2 was.
Well, that could explain why none of the new Combine infantry in the episodes have trenchcoats?
Conversely, long-clothing sometimes looks weird in source. I think.
That's a good point, I bet that had a lot to do with it... I think it would have looked very awkward in source.

All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
