Hey folks,
Yet another my-life-is-average-esque adventure I'm engaging in. My girlfriend had her credit card identity stolen. Charges started appearing on her credit card... but not the sort you would expect reflecting a master-mind crime. Skype charges for like $5.00, a recurring subscription to some vitamins for $4.00. Six charges came up over the course of 3 days, all for relatively small quantities. My girlfriend called her credit card company, got the card canceled, got the charges taken away, the usual stuff.
But then something interesting occurred. Apparently, the vitamins got shipped to my girlfriend's credit card address. So she called up the company, told them it was fraudulent, asked them to un-subscribe her, told them she'd return the package. After she confirmed who she was or whatnot they actually gave her the number of the person who ordered the vitamins.
Tossing it into White Pages, I found out it's a Verizon cell phone number, one county away from where my girlfriend and I lived all summer. No exact address or name listed. Is there anywhere interesting I can go from here? I could report the number to some police department but I'm not sure they'd care all that much. Some services claim they know the name/address/etc associated with the cell phone number but obviously want me to pay money... I'm not that interested.
So do you guys have any ideas? Any sites that can generate more information for me? Would it be wrong to call/text the person and ask him/her what makes them such a bad criminal? This is likely criminal, right? Ordering $20 of random stuff a month after we moved away from that area is kind of bizarre.

There are watchdog websites you can report this type of stuff to, I'm sure some of the folks here know a few of them. And you should definately fill out a police report. It gets results more often than you think.
Which detective? The local police department for the town my girlfriend's credit card has listed as a 'billing address'? It's a tiny town, I'm not sure they have the resources to investigate. Or should I contact the county police department for where the number came from?
In any case, I figure as long as I'm not breaking the law and am not coming into actual risk in doing so, I'd like to investigate a bit just for entertainment value. After all, the charges have all been dropped so there's no benefit one way or another for my girlfriend if the guy is caught.
Would you stick your head in the fire if I told you you could see hell?
Leave this to the professionals bro, trust me, you don't want to have anything to do with this type of person.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
You should go through the proper channels, like the police and your credit card company, to get this resolved.
I'm going to agree with Batman in that you should not try to be Batman on this guy.
Second of all, how do you know that that is actually the guy's phone number?
