iPhone won't restore

So, my iPhone was working perfectly.

Then I upgraded to iTunes 9 on my PC and then attempted to upgrade the iPhone to OS 3.1

Spent about 4 hours 'updating' the software, but basically iTunes had hung and wasn't doing anything. Rebooted and put the iPhone into recovery mode and now it won't restore either.

Give me a miracle solution plzkthnks.

Ideally I'd obviously prefer to restore the iPhone on the PC and then load my most recent backup onto it, however I do have a (pretty old) mac laptop for work. Could I perform the from the PC to the Mac via an external HDD and then load uprestore on the Mac and then load a backup from the PC? Could I even perform the restore on the Mac and transfer the backup to the iPhone from the Mac that way?

Edit: I guess the other possibility is the iPhone software took a couple of hours to download (which seemed pretty ridiculous for a 250Mb file - do Apple's servers suck?). Is it possible the download was corrupted which is affecting the restore and update? If so how can I kill that copy so I can download it again?

Have you entered your phone into DFU mode?

Additionally, the apple servers are rarely crowded and I can usually grab stuff at 1Mb a second.

If you look around here in the Jailbreaking section you'll find a direct link to the 3.1 firmware file. Enter your phone into DFU mode (google it) and then hold down shift and click restore.

This will let you manually select a local file for your firmware.

Yep, I was in DFU mode I believe (I had to reset it to DFU mode after the update failed because the iPhone was stuck on the loading bar screen that shows up when it initiates an update).

I tried a recovery on my Mac and it appeared to complete the process properly although when I tried to reconnect it to iTunes on the Mac it gave an unknown error.

However, it now works after plugging it back into the PC and I am in the process - hopefully - of restoring yesterday's backup.

Fingers crossed that this does not fuck up although at least I now know that at a bare minimum I can go back to factory defaults and start from scratch.

I am also going to clone this backup onto my old 2G handset in case of future shenanigans.

Now I just need to sit and wait for 6gigs of audio and apps to copy back over. Doot doot doot.
