The rear hatchback door on my wifes '95 Subaru Impreza wagon won't open. It is locked, and the key isn't working anymore. Is there a way that I could get the door unlocked from the inside? It looks like I could probably remove the two bolts holding the latch on the door part from the inside, but I don't know if that would actually give me enough space to move the latch out of hte way and I don't want to mess with the thing too much if it won't solve the problem.
I know on my 93 saturn, i can open the trunk from the inside. You can just turn the backside of where the key goes in on the outside. Makes the two rods on the sides retract and lets the trunk open.
If there's any part of the latching mechanism that moves that you can see and physically move, try that first. I'm assuming it doesn't have any sort of in-car release, since it's a hatch-type door? Next, is the reason that the key doesn't work because the key is really worn down, or do you think it's the latch itself? If the key is really worn down, you should be able to go to a dealer and get them to cut you a new key (should be like 8 bucks). Worst-case scenario, you take it to a mechanic and he figures it out.
On a side note, I drive a 97 Saturn and have always wanted a way to open the trunk from inside. I never thought of turning the thing myself. Good call, Grimm.
There is a small amount of the latch visible with enough room to get a screwdriver in, but I can't get enough leverage to move it very much. There is no interior release for the door and the problem is with the latch itself. The key still works fine on the other doors and ignition. We called the local subaru dealer where we got the car from, and they quoted a price of at least $150 just to figure out what the problem is, and then it could go up to as much as $300-400 to actually fix it. We are getting rid of it soon, so I don't really feel like spending that much to fix it.
