The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
The protaginist, Jonathan Ames is a struggling novelist. His girlfriend just broke up with him and moved out ("Too much white wine and pot" he laments). Unsure what to do with himself he picks up an old detective novel posts an ad on craigslist advertising his services as an (unlicensed) private detective. Between Jonathan's... inexperience, his boss's substance abuse problems, and his friend's dysfunctional relationship, this has the makings of a fun show.
Personally I enjoyed the premiere and will be adding this to my DVR.

After Pushing Daisies' cancellation, I didn't think another off-beat detective show would come around for a while. Hopefully this is around as good as that and Andy Barker P.I.
The pilot wasn't laugh-out-loud hilarious, but the premise definitely has potential. I don't really like the main character, hopefully he becomes less whiny and spineless as the show goes on.
Yeah, I don't think I can stand an entire series based around a mopey Jason Schwartzman taking on detective jobs for no real reason at all beyond boredom.
Checked this out for my sister, who is a massive Scwartzman fan. Not bad. The second episode was miles above the first, at least in terms of funny. I can see it going well if they think of some more interesting cases.
Thanks for the reminder. I've been wanting to watch this show. It's difficult to make a good comedy. By far one of the funniest shows I have seen in a LONG time is the British series The IT Crowd. Check it out.
The show is pretty good, but suffers from overuse of a Indie Soundtrack
But Ted Danson as the weed smoking weird boss? Zack Galifinakis as a neurotic Webcomic artist? And Scwartzman kinda ties it all together. I hope this gets to have a long run, because it feels alot like a comfort show, that doesn't suck
I find the music to be a little generic, so it never distracts. But I'm not big on the New York scene, so I'm probably missing a lot.
The show is actually based on a short story Ames wrote, with himself as the main character. But Ames is known for writing personal essays and memoirs, so himself being the main character wasn't that big of a deal, just that he explicitly names himself in a fiction story (as apposed to a non-fiction essay about himself, or a fiction about someone else, but probably still about himself).
i hope we get some more Galifinakis air time though, i know its like 28 minutes run time, but i kinda need to see the everyday life of manic depressive webcomic artist Zack Galifinakis
No mystery. It's nice that they're not married to that formula, but it does seem a little early to switch things up. It's still episodic, so there was no plot reason not to have a mystery. Whatever.
A bit of gratuitous nudity. It's HBO.
The episode was fun. Harper Lee gag was a little out of left field, but I chuckled in retrospect.
Good! Hopefully they can get some interesting stories to run together over the course of a few episodes. So far it has been a non-mystery, and two very small ones. I'm looking forward to some serious business where we see him in over his head, even if that as a premise is a little cliche.
If anyone had any doubt whether this show was worth it, really, watch the latest episode. It manages its time alot better, and you get Ted Danson/Zach Galifinakis team up, which was pretty awesome.
Also Patton Oswalt guest appearance, as a spy gadget store owner, which seems like hes being set up as Scwartzman "Q" of sorts. Wasn't really in form, or the writers flubbed his character, but he has real potential as a future guest star
Is anyone still watching this show? I'm just taking a breather from The Case of the Beautiful Blackmailer. It was causing me to hyperventilate. I think I need to pee too.
I think it's... I dunno, my inner autistic just needs to compare and rank everything, I need to compare this to Community or something. This show is so damn good!
Kind of reminds me of the shit me and my rich friends did in China.

i don't get why he was freaking out when the guy was threatening him with a lighter, was it because he was high?

i know he's in that solo band coconut records, it sounded kind of like him.
also jonathan ames created the show and then named the main character after himself.
i guess i'd do that if i made a show.

but other than the humor is kinda of awesome, point in case second episode
where
Quite good.
A legitimate concern, good thing there were gloves handy. Every scene with the colon cleaning guy was golden.
I am going to find all your treasures.
Ted Danson is really making this show awesome.

I really like this show. So perfectly cast.
I like BtD quite a bit, but I don't think it's going to go more than one season. Also this most recent episode is probably the least funny so far.
Also its been renewed for a 2nd season, and HBO usually stands by these things
I think I'm in love.

My first real exposure to Zach Galif... something... was The Hangover. It's still weird seeing him as the (most) responsible one. He's awesome too.
