Need Help with selecting a How-To Book

My guy has started creating comics and I've seen some of the work that he does. It's pretty good so far; he mainly does the anime art styles, but he is still in the learning phase of drawing. So far he does sketches of characters, and has a good storyline he pitched to me, but he's still "rough around the edges" so to speak, and is weak in the area of doing backgrounds in the panels. he does all of his work on a sketchbook, , but I'm sure eventually he will progress to using a computer (photoshop w/wacom tablet and etc.)

His birthday is next week and I wanted to buy him a book(s) that focuses on how to create comics. I am not sure if I should be looking at Scott Mccloud's books ("Understanding Comics", "Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga and Graphic Novels" , and "Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art.") or something that teaches artists like him how to draw anime, like the book "How To Draw Manga: Sketching Manga-Style Volume 4: All About Perspective."

Can anyone give me an opinion about the books above, if they were helpful to you or not? Do you have any that you would personally recommend as the "bible of all comic creation?" If so, please post!

P.S. I did see the forum sticky with the references but i'm looking for opinions from people who have actually read these types of books.
