Keep Eating Dirt in Arcanum

Hey,
I've started this game 3-4 times. I quickly give up, which as a veteran cRPG player, is pretty embarassing. None of my builds survive the real time combat system for longer than a few minutes, and I can't seem to really hurt anything. Does anyone have tips for surviving the early game?

Or if you want to go talky, get Virgil asap and just try and avoid as much combat as possible until you have more followers and have done a few quests to level up some.
9 Charisma will hire the half Ogre, making things easier. Also be sure to use the explosive grenade on those thieves guarding the door. Or just put 1 point into pickpocket and take the key.
Or maybe cool interesting characters, like my hated but well meaning half-orc chemist. He can do combat and technology. Don't just pick humans or elves.
I've always looked for the most oblique non-combat ways to solve encounters in Arcanum, even with my combat monster character. The game is practically built around being able to solve situations non-violently.
I've got a simple set of instructions on how to be invincible in real time combat in Arcanum. You'll need to focus your experience into improving the Mechanical branch to maximum, but it's well worth the effort.
1. Find schematics for Explosive Grenades.
2. Find schematics for Automatons.
3. Using stuff you find in garbage bins in Tarant, make incredibly large amounts of Explosive Grenades.
4. Sell Explosive Grenades to buy Steam Engines and other parts needed to make Automatons.
5. Continue until you've got 30 or more Automatons.
6. Cackle madly.
Enemies will focus on you in combat, and by the time they realise what's going on they'll be ripped into tiny, bloody pieces by your mechanical army. You don't need to lift a finger!

Automatons are fun, but Mechanical Arachnids are superior even though they are inferior for the simple fact that its a steampunk fucking spider.

It's only a shame that you couldn't make a giant Mechanical Arachnid to use as a mount.
Theres also Medical Arcachnids that heal you while face raping enemies.
