Port forwarding/Networking Woes

I tried to portforward with my D-Link Dl-254 router using a guide I got off portforward.com. I did everything as they said only then for none of my computers on my home network to be able to connect to the internet.

I then reset the router and once again went through the process of setting up the network, yet still none of the computers were able to connect to the internet. This is seriously a frustrating issue as now it seems the router is good for nothing.

Right now I have connected a computer directly to the modem so that I dont have to go through the router. Should I just buy a new router or what should I do ?

Did you set up any of the comps with a static ip?

No. Couldn't work out how to do that anyway.

    Looking at the router list on portforward.com I don't see a Dl-254 D-Link router.
Does the computer say anything about networking when you start it up?
What exactly did you change? Only router settings? Did you set up the router initially? Is everything wired or are some devices wireless?

Sorry it's the DI-524. My mistake.

Nope the computer doesnt say anything about networking when it starts up.

I went into the router and added a Virtual Server as was indicaited in the guide:
    http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Dlink/DI-524/Utorrent.htm

That was the only thing I did. I didn't go about setting a static IP or anything else.\

Yes I did initially set up the router when I first got it.

There are 2 wired computers connected along with my 360 and one laptop connected to it wireless.

Also, I deleted the entry when I realised that for some reason it had caused none of the computers to be able to connect to the net.

What did you do when you set it up initially? Just plugged everything in and turned it on? Did you do the same thing the second time?
What do you mean by reset? Did you hold in the pinhole button on the router for a few seconds?

    Heres some stuff to try:
    1) Full reset. Plug everything in like normal and turn everything off either by shutting down or unplugging power cords. Turn everything back on one at a time with a few minutes in between devices so they can boot up fully. Start with the modem then router then one of the wired computers. This should reset your ip address and hopefully allow you to access the internet. Probably don't need to say this but don't just unplug your computers :P
    2) Post your ipconfig results. I don't believe anything really private is going to be in this file, but make sure your name or whatever isn't in it. Heres how you do this in xp:
    a) open start menu
    b) click run
    c) type cmd (press enter)
    d) type ipconfig/all (press enter)
    e) click on the box in the upper left corner of the window and go to edit -> mark
    f) highlight everything and go back up to that box and go to edit -> copy
    g) paste that bitch in here.
    h) hopefully I can find something weird.

Wow do I feel stupid. Just turning everything off and then on seems to have worked. Guess sometimes you just gotta think about the simple solutions.

    Thanks a lot !

Now I just need help actually port forwarding. Just a few questions though:
Would I need to set static IP's for all computers ?
How would this affect my 360 ?
If I port forward it would work for all the computers connected to the router ?

    Your welcome.

Would I need to set static IP's for all computers ?
No, you can have a pool of auto configured ip's and set the static ones outside the range of the auto pool. Of course this is assuming that your router has this functionality. If it doesn't then yes they will all need static ip's.

How would this affect my 360 ?
You give it a static ip just like the computers or you do the auto ip pool.

If I port forward it would work for all the computers connected to the router ?
You might be able to have an entry in the port forwarding list for each computer, but I doubt it. I have never tried to forward to more than one computer.

Have you updated the firmware for the router? I know from experience some D-Link routers had a problem saving port forwards with the default firmware.
