This is a thread about
Final Fantasy, the greatest RPG series of all time.
No other series could come close to the pedestal of
Final Fantasy, and every single RPG that's tried has failed miserably to the point that I want to vomit through my eyes.
The character designs are as perfect as Greek statues, displaying a dazzling combination of belts and zippers that no man would ever dream of.
The music is such a powerful choir of heavenly bliss, that much of the soundtrack must be composed in a MIDI format, as the orchestral arrangements would be such that it could cause a literal melting of faces.
Gaze ye onto the holy discussion of our unconquerable lord and savior,
Final Fantasy. Let us not speak of the heretics who spend their bygone days plotting new, unspeakable forms of heresy that dare raise doubt that
Final Fantasy is anything but the holiest of relics, the most sacred of testaments.
If I could bold the following any harder, I would, but once again I want to stress this:
DO NOT engage in any "my favorite FF vs your piece of shit FF" debates. It's your right to like whichever entries you like, so it's only fair that you respect other fans' preferences. THIS INCLUDES KINGDOM HEARTS COMPARISONS AS WELL. STOP YOUR BITCHING.
I also want to stress that
this thread is for Final Fantasy discussion only. You can briefly discuss other Square Enix titles, and even a couple of non-SE RPGs,
but keep it short. Kingdom Hearts discussion is allowed.
And finally, another rule I've skirted but am now enforcing in full force:
MARK ALL FINAL FANTASY SPOILERS. YES, EVEN THE ONES EVERYONE KNOWS ABOUT. I notice more and more people trying different numbered titles for the first time, so
PLEASE BE COURTEOUS.
Now let's get started.
Compilation of Final Fantasy VIIThe Next Final Fantasy VII Entry:
What is it? A lot of people think that with the release of Crisis Core, the Compilation is now over. Not so, says Nomura, who has commented that he is currently conceptualizing the next entry. Anyone who has played Dirge of Cerberus (and you have, admit it) knows that there's still a lingering threat who will no doubt cause a lot of commotion for Cloud and co., but no other details remain.
Final Fantasy VII: The Remakehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cv8cYrGG220
As long as FFVII remains popular, you aren't going to stop hearing false rumors and fan pleadings for this to be made. The unanimous belief is that Square will one day make this, but as to when remains a mystery at this point. Regardless, it is a case of when, not if.
Final Fantasy VII Novellas: On The Way To A SmileWhat is it? Created during Advent Children's production, these official short stories expand a bit on the two year span between the end of the original game and Advent Children. "Case of Denzel" is the ony one to get an anime adaption so far, but it is still highly recommend that fans read the other stories, as they offer some touching, character-driven moments. It also helps to establish Cloud's emotional state of mind during Advent Children.
Three more novellas are planned to be released soon, including Case of Yuffie (woo!), Case of The Turks (eh), and Case of Red XIII (eh?)

Let's Play Final Fantasy VII: By AdusFinal Fantasy VII PC: Re-ImaginedWhat is it? Using a text editor, I have decided to rewrite the entire script of FFVII, creating a more consistent translation along with some personal touches to greater expand the characters and setting. The script is done with serious intentions, but I've balanced things out with humor, both referential and personal. I don't have a promised release date on when this will be finished, since in truth I would rather devote all my attention to a more important project....(
Update: Before you ask, I have not given up on this project. With my "other project" on a sort of hiatus, I'm planning to continue work on this re-translation....very, very slowly.)
Final Fantasy VII Comic: ExGenesisWhat is it? When I had learned that DeviantArt member
DarkChildx2k had the aspiration to create an FFVII comic, I decided to send him an E-mail to see if he would like my assistance in writing and planning the dialog. After several online interactions, it turned out that DarkChild is in fact a professional freelancer, who is attending this year's San Diego comic-con to promote his official book Shadowlaw. In addition, however, he also plans to have a one-on-one meeting with
Udon, who will be attending the convention, and whom its founders are good friends of his. With a completed portfolio in hand, he hopes to convince Udon to officially license our project, turning it into an official series.
And to top it off, I have full writing and directing duties. I have submitted scripts and concepts to him and his editor on a weekly basis, and he's approved every single idea so far. Sketches are sent to me almost daily, which you can view on the following
Photobucket account. He hopes to have colored illustrations and storyboards sent to me as well, along with an official website. You guys are the only forum that I've shown this stuff too, so any input or contributions you would like to share would be greatly appreciated. In addition to the portfolio, he and I are also scouring for talented fan-artists out there to submit their talents, as an effort to show Udon that there's already a community out there that wants this comic to take off.
Even if the book doesn't get approved, or if I'm taken off the project due to my inexperience, it's still worth working with this artist, as he has several connections in both the comic and animated community, and promises to share those contacts with me should an opportunity come up. Regardless, I'll shoot high and show Udon and Square Enix what I can do, and will work to deliver the best adaption of the beloved FFVII series that I possibly can. (
Update: Because he didn't have enough material ready, Darkchild had chosen not to speak to Udon about licensing details yet. I can't say much more than that, except that material is still being made, and that we hope to get the ball rolling again later this year).
Dead Fantasyhttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/26450.htmlhttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/32364.htmlhttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/52656.htmlhttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/52836.htmlhttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/53443.htmlWhat is it? A series of fan-made vids by the one-man team of Monty Oum, Dead Fantasy is, simply put, a nonstop orgy of action involving the ladies of Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive. Don't get turned on just yet, though, because these ladies are using their various skills to pummel each other into the pavement (now you can get turned on). Essentially a fanfiction come to life, Dead Fantasy is an entertaining series requiring no brain power to enjoy the over-the-top action and skilled choreography. Personally I find the DOA inclusion unnecessary as a simple FF vs FF brawl would have been just as entertaining (plus there isn't anyone outside of Ryu Hayabusa who would prove to be a match for anyone from FF), but it's good fun nonetheless.
Somewhere along the line, Monty decided to add "plot" to his videos, and now we have a long-running conspiracy of.....something, as well as a "shocking" cliffhanger that seems to be a response to criticisms regarding a lack of blood and injury. Watching Tifa do her best Kill Bill impersonation sounds cool in theory, but getting impaled with a dozen arrows is kind of pushing it a bit.
I'm curious how it ends, though.
Fabula Nova CrystalisFinal Fantasy XIIIhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APatTjdHVg8Release Date: December 17th 2009 (Japan)
NA: Spring 2010
What is it?The first truly next-gen JRPG. You know it, I know it. The buzz on this game has been highly positive, especially with the release of the recent demo (no word yet if NA will get it as well). To top it off, that demo's only a 50% build, with the final version poised to rock our socks off.
The game's localization is working quite closely with the Japanese development, although NA fans will still have to wait until Spring 2010 while Japan gets to have a Merry Christmas with their Winter 2009 release. On the upside, the English version will feature re-synched lips, ala Kingdom Hearts.
Final Fantasy Versus XIIIhttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/48154.htmlWhat is it? Nomura's debut as director for an FF game, and one that he promises will be the darkest entry in the series, possibly even garnering an M rating. It's still quite a ways off, as the clip above doesn't even feature voice acting. However, the way it's looking now, it could even surpass FFXIII in visuals, as the clothing details (made by
Roen) are quite superb.
Final Fantasy Agito XIIIhttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/48159.htmlWhat is it?A seemingly multiplayer game where players can take their custom characters and perform various missions. The game was originally going to be on the cellphones, which had me all ":|". But now it's coming for the PSP, so now I'm ":)". I can only hope that this basically plays out like an online version of FFVIII's high school setting.
Final Fantasy Online
Final Fantasy XIV: Onlinehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGKnc_3dbmc
Release Date: 2010 (Worldwide)
One of E3's biggest surprise announcements, Final Fantasy XIV has been unveiled, to the surprise of everyone attending. Then it was revealed to be another online title in the vein of Final Fantasy XI, which killed the anticipation somewhat. I, on the other hand, am absolutely thrilled at the prospect of a next-gen sequel to FFXI, and I'm optimistic that Square can iron out the criticisms of their first online game and make their next attempt something stellar.
Kingdom Hearts SeriesKingdom Hearts: 358 Days/2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ErpcczmhGURelease Date: September 29What is it? A DS game centering on Roxas' time as a member of Organization XIII. The entire Organization is playable, and the game features a four-player multiplayer mode. Hopefully this will have an online component as well as ad hoc. It's almost certain that NA will receive this game this year.
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleephttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBPHV1-VlGwRelease Date: January 2010 (Japan)What is it? Set 14 years before "Sora's journey", this prequel features three new characters (including one that bears an intentional resemblance to Roxas) as they traverse previously unseen Disney Worlds such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty.
Final Fantasy Spin-OffsDissidia: Final Fantasyhttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/50692.htmlRelease Date: Out Now! (NA)
What is it? The first (and certainly not the last) crossover FF fighting game. The NA version is supposedly very close to being wrapped up, though no word if there will be any additions such as new characters. It's a shame if there aren't, since I have
quite a few people I'd like to see show up to lighten up the near sausage-fest of male heroes.
The NA version is said to contain some extra features, from rebalanced characters to additional cutscenes, to perhaps even a few more "cameo appearances" by other famous characters.
How To Upload Replays: Dissidia is one of the few games to feature a nifty replay feature that lets you convert a video, save it on your PC, and upload it to Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1DMGJusxY0
To do this is very simple:
1. Go to "Musem", pick "Battle Replay"
2. Pick the "Convert Video" option
3. Choose the video you want to convert.
4. Choose the quality of the converted video. Stick with Standard, as most vids will probably be too huge/long for High Quality.
5. After it has converted the vid, connect your PSP to your PC through USB Mode
6. Navigate to your VIDEO folder, and there should be a new folder called DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY.
7. Upload to Youtube.
A much more taxing hassle is the multiplayer feature, which is currently OFFLINE ONLY. Supposedly the PSP will be receiving an update that will allow Ad-Hoc parties, which is some sort of method where you can use your PS3 to connect with players online, but until such a method becomes available, you'll have to hope you can find a friend or neighbor that owns the game.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearershttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8hhkfcpzkMRelease Date: December 26th 2009What is it? It's hard to say, really. It looks like another Crystal Chronicles knockoff, but it seems a lot more action oriented than anything ever seen in Final Fantasy. The main character has some pretty cool powers that might make wiimote play amusing, but it remains to be seen. This game has had a long development time, so I hope it's paid off.
Final Fantasy IV: The After Yearshttp://www.gametrailers.com/player/50210.htmlRelease Date: Fall 2009 (NA)
What is it? Once a Japanese cellphone exclusive, the sequel to FFIV is now available on the Wiiware.
This game plays it up oldschool-style, featuring the tried and true ATB system along with plenty of returning characters (as well as a few new ones).
Yours truly is reviewing each episode as they are available.
Episode One ReviewRydia's Tale ReviewFinal Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life As A Dark Lordhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FcpaSPAeFQWhat is it? A counter spin-off to My Life as a King, this WW game places you in charge of the Dark Lord's apprentice, as you must set up traps and monsters to fend off warriors from invading your castle and beheading your master.
I enjoyed King for its simple, easy to pick up gameplay, and I'm also a big fan of Disgaea, so I've got an eye on this one. It certainly looks quite charming.
Final Fantasy Gaiden: The 4 Warriors of Lighthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zuR5TYWNUoWhat is it?A new DS game which isn't quite a remake of the original FF, but not quite a Crystal Chronicles game either. You play a party of four tasked with saving a princess from an evil dark lord. The game seems to feature co-op gameplay along with a job system. That's about all that's known so far. The pale-faced sprites a kind of creepy.
Final Fantasy.....Fortress?Release Date: Never? What is it? GRIN, the company responsible for the awesome Bionic Commando: Re-Armed and the terrible everything else, was apparently working on a secret "Final Fantasy Action Game". Full details can be found in the link above, which talks about the code-named "Fortress" and how it was apparently set in FFXII's world (not sure if that means specifically FFXII's setting, or just Ivalice in general).
Square giving control of their flagship title to a Western developer is pretty surprising, but considering GRIN's track record with 3D games, this cancellation might be for the best. It opens up a world of thought now, though.
It has been recently reported that the project isn't dead yet, as Square seized all the assets before GRIN closed down, and are seeking another publisher to finish it. I just hope they scrap the concept art, which is a bit too western fantasy for Final Fantasy (and generic western art at that......who keeps messenger falcons anymore?

Mostly because it came from the big countdown thread. I've been trying to keep up with all the info for it as I can as well.

Or, even better, we could just never post that shit ever again.
So is this ever discussed in-game? Did I miss a conversation or am I crazy or what?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_rAL1yxSdE
There's never a conversation that I recall, but you can kinda see it on his character model.
It looks more like scars along the edge of his clothing in the game. And of course, he had the giant belt, which unless you look closely, looks like an eyepatch/visor that goes down by his ears instead of being stitched on his face.

I know, seriously. I kind of wish by the end of the game, she somehow reverted back to a child, or could freely change between the two forms.
I'd post fan-art of Adult Rydia, but nearly all of it is NSFW. Where did it ever state that she was a D cup of higher?
Blog||Tumblr|Steam|Twitter|FFXIV|Twitch|YouTube|Podcast|PSN|XBL|DarkZero
I've always found that kinda funny. FF games, save Tifa, haven't traditionally starred women of particularly large endowment.
Tifa isn't even close to the largest endowed or the most skimpily dressed.
Edit: To be more specific (and keep in mind this is based on opinionated observation as there are no official measurements listed for any of the characters, thank god), the largest endowed character by a country mile is Lulu. Beatrix may be 2nd, or even 1st if you factor in her super-deformed body.
Most skimpily dressed but also largely endowed would either be Yunalesca, or Celes (again, trying not to use fan-art as a reference, but it's probable considering her one piece leotard outfit, and how her breasts seem to jut much more than any other sprite in FFVI).
Yes, I've probably thought this through too much, but it's tiring to hear that Tifa takes the top (pardon the pun) choice based on outdated FMV. Having a revised model AC and over hasn't changed this foolish thinking.

He's probably going to have the most awesome summon in order to overshadow his faults.
Like, bahamut, and it turns into an orbital cannon.
Still looking foward to playing it, oh and if any Square-Enix people are reading this, please put both the Incredibles and the Fantastic Four in Kingdom Hearts 3 and have them interact, thank you.
You mean Hope?
According to Game Informer, thats a girl.

As for your comment about why Rydia would be drawn that way, I chalk it up to the fact that It's Japan.

I dunno, most of the more ridiculous fanart I've seen has been from Americans.
Hmm, I thought I had a pic. of Adult Rydia that was super awesome, but now I can't find it...
Oh well, i still have cute pictures of Yuffie.
Then post them!
