iPod Surgery

So the center button on my 4th generation iPod has lost all functionality. The button had no range of motion and it was messing up the sensitivity of the surrounding touch wheel.

Anyway, figuring the thing was old enough to have some fun I open it up and have been exploring the inside. Once I have it open and there is no pressure on the backside of the mechanism all the buttons work great and the ipod is fully functional, just open.

Now for the question. I'm trying to figure out how I can put less pressure on the button because I think something may have just shifted around and now it has no give and I'm noticing this battery is awfully... bloated? Is that normal? I had assumed the battery had straight demensions, but if one were to measure this thing you would not have the same height across the entire surface. It's kind of like a pillow and I'm wondering if something went terribly wrong at some point and that's why there is no wiggle room for the button.

You could probably google instructions for how to replace the battery on your iPod, and they would likely have a picture of a "healthy" battery, that you could compare yours to.

Sonnet Tech makes the best batteries for iPods. Here's yours:

Upgraded cell, longer life, better retention. And cheaper than getting an Apple brand replacement. I rebuilt my old G3 with their stuff, and I am 100% satisfied!

But as for your problem, yeah. The bloated battery is most likely what's causing your buttons to act wonky. So replace it. With the part listed above.
