So... they apparently made Strange Adventures in Infinite Space free.

Anyone played it? It's apparently a pretty good little lunchtime game.

(Better OP incoming, please stand by.)

    Oh hell yes.

I've always wanted to play this, but I never got around to buying it.

Sometimes procrastination pays off in the sweetest ways.

    Oh fucking sweet!

Yessss. I played the demo as a procrastination device for like 3 days straight a few years ago. Lovely.

Not only that, apparently they released the source code. Awesome stuff.

Does NOT like Windows 7 however. Gonna try turning off Aero next. Wonder if there's aw ay to make it run in Windowed mode...

Great game. I played the crap out of the weaker Palm version.

The sequel "Weird Worlds: Return to Infinate Space" has a permanent place on my desktop.

I've just had my ass shot off three times in between this post and my last one in the thread. I love these kinds of games. I'm sure I'll be playing the hell out of this and most likely I'll end up buying Weird Worlds.

The combat in the original was a lot better, in my opinion, since you could see the state of ships' shields and armor instead of having to mouseover. Maybe they eventually fixed that, though? But from the original demo, I couldn't really do anything other than "full speed ahead and hope our shields and guns are better than the other guy's."

Ok. Running windows 7 now - not in windowed mode but the colors look normal at least. Here's what I did.
    Properties
Run Program in Compatibility Mode for Windows xp - service pack 2
Check all settings like 256 colors etc. except for the last one (scaling one)

I think that should do it.
It is a little hard to read but it is at least playable.

I agree with you on the combat being a little better in the original. I liked being able to keep track of the health of my entire squad. I think one of the draws of these types of games is that you will die. Its just when you do it you don't lose a whole afternoon of playtime.

I kinda like how in the sequel the diplomatic route was even easier with the right items. In the higher difficulties it gets a little tough with even with the Frigate and 2 Particle Vortex Cannons.

So this is a space roguelike that includes lots of randimsation and horrible, grizzly, hilarous death? If so count me in

Not really? You pretty much just get a star chart of planets linked by edges. You have a limited period of time to visit as many planets as possible. Sometimes you find ship upgrades or rare animals on planets. You also occasionally run into friendly aliens who will trade with you. Other times you find enemies who want to fight you. Except for battles, the whole thing takes place through dialog boxes on the star chart.

It shares some traits with roguelikes. The map is randomly generated, as are items and artifacts. It can be easy to die if you don't meet the Klakons soon and sometimes your ship can be destroyed by natural disaster.

This game's awesome. I was mired in nebulae for a while, and saw a strange pattern of supernovas. It was too late when I realized it was a superweapon that destroyed Hope. :(

A game later, I explored the entire map in only four years after recruiting the guys from the launcher icon as an ally. They had a fold drive!

On a side note, the Babylon artifact apparently makes all races friendly to you. Too bad I had it stolen in an earlier game right after I got it. In my most recent game, everyone loved me, I found the thrusters that let me fly throgh nebulae, and I racked up 5,000 credits and a job as an executive. I found this one weapon that could also be quite hideously powerful. It launched balls of energ that'd zap anything that got near. It made short work of an enemy light carrier. The evil, dickish slaver race.

Cripes, I forgot how good the Cloak was.

Have a bunch of short-range weapons, cloak up right behind a enemy ship, and KABOOM, and then cloak away.

    It's like playing a Spy. D:

So, when are we going to get a leaderboard going?

After all those years I just learned something new about the game.. If you are able to meet up with the thing that makes the stars go nova it pushes you into a battle with a super tough yellow boss ship. Now I get to see what happens when you kill it. Too bad it only shows up at random in games. I used to just ragequit when that happened.

This is true. In fact, random numbers and chance seem to play a far greater role in this game than in roguelikes, simply because you've got many fewer options and less flexibility.

Really, this game just makes me want to play a sweet turn based strategy game and set up a trading network with the aliens while defending my trading routes and colonized planets from hostiles. Epic space conquest in 20 minutes! I don't really know of any games like that, though.

Once you edit the data files to show how many points everything is worth, it's not hard to quickly hit the top of the curve. I've never managed to get the instant-kill item together with the starkiller event, though.

There is actually a 4x on Steam that can be played in 20 minutes. Can't remember the name though.

If you unequip your Hyperdrive and head for the nearest system with just your sub-light thruster, you'll waste a lot of time getting there but you'll escape before the Nova.

This is good fun for a free game but I'd feel a tad ripped off had I payed for it. In a game that relies on it's random element for replay value there simply isn't a large enough pool of random things for it pick from.

That said, best score so far: 6717

I'm interested to see how that measures up against the rest of you.

Loving this game. I just had a session where a thief stole my star drive at the very first planet. Whoops! Didn't get very far after that. :P And earlier I finally had a game with the Yellow Kawangi in it, wreaking havoc. I love that there are still new fun permutations of the random events even after a couple dozen play-throughs.

On this Windows XP desktop the colors go wonky after a few play-throughs, it has an Nvidia Geforce card. Doesn't matter what compatibility options I select. A quick restart of the game fixes it though, so no biggie. On my laptop with an older ATI card, no such problems at all.

Neat. I got my hands on Weird Worlds. My second game, I found the Sword of Damocles and ventured into the Monstro Black Hole to ram it into the haunted space station. :D
