Man. I don't know whether to be mad or happy at this.
Before beth said they were definatly not doing a full expansion. After I had beaten everything and gotten some good playthroughs done, I just uninstalled the game including my saves because I didn't think I'd play it again in the near future.
I really really hope that this concludes in a GOTY 360 edition with all DLC, with the voices in Knights of the Nine improved to match the quality of the original game.
Wait what? How bad does voice acting have to be that it has to be raised up to the level of Oblivion? Oblivion had some pretty bad voice acting aside from a few major characters. Four voice actors recycled, all of which sound like they're 60, for justice.
I think in Oblivion, the voice acting was fine. In Knights of the Nine it was shitty.
Voice acting is not the same as dialogue however, and in the Oblivion franchise the dialogue sucks.
'Hello there.'
'Hello'
'I hear there have been disturbances in Morrowind'
'Indeed'
'Well goodbye then'
'Yes. Indeed'
Its like fuckin Twisp and Catsby talking to each other. The radiant AI was not so hot.

Yeah, that was especially fun. What makes me happy is every race having one voice actor. Every black dude in the game sounded exactly the same. Nords and Orcs sounded awfully similar to eachother. Dunmer and Altmer had the same voice acting, as did most Bretons and Imperials.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game, it's just they could have done with some more voice actors. This coming from a guy who didn't mind the voice acting in Gothic 2.

God, I hope not. I paid $20 for the DLC. It would be awfully depressing to have to rebuy it all just to get the expansion.

You know, I don't mind listening to music in the background and reading a busload of text if its some compelling story related stuff. At least with morrowind, I could scroll back up and read what I was told or had a good journal that I could use to backtrack. It stricks me that the Neverine took better notes than the new hero.
Going back to morrwind and creating Thor, lets see Lady Alemexia kill me when I rain hammer blows from above!
Okay, I slacked off on my Oblivion diary for one of my characters because I got burned out on it, but with an expansion... I hearby promise to chronicle my entire adventures in it.
Of course, no guarantee which character I use for it. :P
I'm more curious when the next one will be released. Do Bethesda have a reliable schedule for these things? Morrowind was 2002 iirc, Oblivion was... was it 2005 or 2006? So that could make the next one come out in what, 2008? 2009 even? In light of that, I would sure hope that it will be somewhat more immersive..

Yeah, Morrowind was 2002, Oblivion 2006. Morrowind was a few months after Xbox launched, and Oblivion was a few months after 360 launched, so maybe ESV will come out a few months after the next Xbox?

That sounds reasonable... Long wait though.
We'll have Fallout 3 to tides us over.
But when? Is there any word of a release date or is this just a DN:F type thing?
In hindsight the radiant AI was really stupid, pointless and unnecessary. It's so fucked up most of the time that it only serves as entertainment. I would've liked for them to spend that time on other aspects of the game, at least.
I loved Oblivion while playing it, but when thinking about it it had some really fucking glaring flaws. Much more than Morrowind did. Not that Morrowind didn't have flaws, but I think they were more noticeable in Oblivion; possibly because Morrowind wasn't really as ambitious.
My main problem with the game is still the leveling/difficulty balancing system. It's just completely fucked up, and is probably the one thing that's keeping me from playing through the game more than once. I know I could mod it, but there are so many choices, and I don't know if I can be arsed.
I can't really get excited for this expansion, because I wouldn't know what the fuck to do with it. I could use my old character, but most of his skills are maxed out (and I doubt they're gonna rebalance the difficulty just for the expansion, anyway), and I really don't want to start new character and do everything again. Gah.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
Interesting, it will really be a hard choice for me to buy this or not.
Personally I played through Oblivion (and even bought the collectors edition) but found myself rather disappointed by the game. I felt that everything from the AI (a group of guards going FFA on each other after killing a demon and accidentally shooting each other in the back) to some of the quests (Final epic battle! And what did we get for all my desperate travels to call for aid? 7 soldiers!) were rather sad.
Combat felt unpolished, playing a mage was pretty much just a matter of running away from the enemies faster than they could catch up while spamming my chaos bolt (a spell that despite dealing like 30 of each elemental damage still looked like the 5 damage fire ball you started with), and while there was technically a decent parrying and blocking system it was so clumsy that it was only marginally better to use strategy than to just spam the side swing attack button. Not to mention a magic system that only had like a total of 7 useful kinds of spells altogether, and brilliant display of the Radiant AI (Citizen A:"Did you hear about cyrodil?" Citizen B:"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Citizen A:"Goodbye")
[/rant]
This did not stop me from completing the game and doing quite a bit of dungeon crawling, but this expansion would still have to add ALOT of flavor to the game for me to start over to play it.
Oblivion frustrated me in more ways than Morrowind did, so I won't be buying this.
Not only the retarded AI and sloppy voice actors, but also the way upgrading your gear worked (aka: running through every portal you found and opening all chests) frustrated me a lot. :? Especially the NPC to NPC interaction, I somehow found a dead body in the middle of the street (I think one of the vampires was messing around) and not even the guards noticed it. They could've done such glorious things there, but alas.
I could really tell the game was trying to appeal to the average action-gamer, which was a shame, I like my epic RPGs to not focus around button-smashing, thank you very much.
I'm looking forward to other developers to take Oblivion's inventions and work it out in a more exciting way.

I was also unhappy with the levelling system, but I modded it out of the game. I hated the main quest and once I started up a new character, I never went near it, I just roamed around and did all the sidequests.
The one thing I really missed in Oblivion was a simple knock command, the magical ability to simply fucking knock on a door, when I know the person I'm looking for is in there.

Well, last E3 they had a poster on their booth. I wouldn't be surprised if we get some concrete details about the game by next Summer.
Actually, I remember hearing in an interview with some guy from Bethesda that they're going to try to release another Elder Scrolls title before the end of this generation, rather than doing one per generation. It was probably a GamingSteve podcast.
The thing that always amuses me about the elder scrolls games is that they never offer "enough." When really, they seem to continually raise the bar for immersion and scope. Yes, we all have nitpicks, but in the long run, they do seem to improve with every new game.
The one thing I really missed in Oblivion was a simple knock command, the magical ability to simply fucking knock on a door, when I know the person I'm looking for is in there.
I...wow, I never even thought of that. In retrospect, having to either wait all night or break into a house to continue a quest is pretty bullshit.

The really crazy thing was that sometimes the person you were looking for would talk to you through the door, if you were close enough. Not the proper let's-continue-your-quest conversation, but the random things NPC's would say, ie What's new with you, Move along, citizen, etc. So they knew I was there, I knew they were there, and yet I had to either wait or become a burglar, because my wise old wizard character haven't figured out how to knock on a door yet.
this sounds awesome. I mean who wouldn't want to buy an expansion pack that adds an island of a god of madness?
Kinda... I expect they're saving the other provinces for future sequels but I really wish they'd used one for this expansion..
With all the NPC talk of the Altmer wizards protesting and boycotting, I was really hoping for Sumerset Isle.
Call me crazy, but... the daedric realms, the realm of Oblivion... I don't want to see any more of it than I have. I like that kind of stuff being left mysterious.

Well if you're a spellcaster there is an "open lock" series of spells you could use. Or alternatively, just wait until daylight hours, when most of the NPC's usually wake up and then head out to follow their daily routine.

I'm willing to bet they release a GOTY version with Oblivion, all the microtransactions, and the expansion for $50-60.
