This is the best "non spoiler" hint sheet I've found (about halfway down the page): http://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/972053-la-mulana/faqs/62747

It's basically a list of what goals you should be accomplishing and in what order. It helps very little with the actual goals; so little in fact that most times I can't even find the solutions even when I need to. For example, I'm trying to find the Axe right now and most places don;t even list it as a weapon in the game.
This is helpful thank you very much.

Killed the double dragons on my first try and made it to Sakit but he killed me twice before I stopped for the night. Headin back in soon. This game is awesome. It's like Indiana Jones in a metroidvania game mixed with dark souls.

    On Ellmac now.
My strategy of throwing a shitton of shurikens at him, followed by whatever flares I have isn't working. Should I switch to a strategy of throwing even more of a shitton of shurikens, or is there a better way? I'd think already having more then a hundred would work, even if half of them wiff...

Until I get the fairies, am I stuck with buying ammo? There does seem to be a relatively ready flow of cash, at least.

Can anyone list off the locations to search for the Eden puzzle? Or the (locations of) clues for it? I have found 3 of 4, I'm missing the one that makes the right-center pedestal appear.

Got Ellmac. Turned out I just needed more shurikens. 123 of them counting whiffs.

  • harvestharvest By birthright, a stupendous badass.Registered User regular
I think I used more shuriken on the Pazuzu miniboss than on Ellmac. Oh that's right, it's because, in the end, I used the pistol on Ellmac. Kind of a waste now that I think about it but oh so satisfying.

Pazuzu is actually in a perfect position to use wheel shuriken, that's how I beat him.

Bahamut is annoying me. I have the axe so I suspect I'm sufficiently geared to fight him, but it feels like I have to position myself perfectly if I want to hit him and not take collision damage. And since the turns will tug at the boat, it's even worse.

I really don't want to have to waste a bunch of flares on him, they're so expensive to buy.

Baphomet and Palenque down. I actually like the changes they made to those bosses. Baphomet was a blast to fight, and Palenque was still a pushover but they added a little something at the end as a final screw you, which I appreciated.

  • harvestharvest By birthright, a stupendous badass.Registered User regular
I used the axe + flares on Bahamut. I only used 6-7 flares though, and yeah, while a box of flares is 40 coins it was worth it to me. I took a ton of collision damage of course, but I think I had 192 life. You can get the Life Jewel in the Chamber of Extinction pretty easily if you need it.

I absolutely love the Chamber of Illusion music. Especially when it first transitions into it when you unlock it for exploration.

Thus far I've defeated Amphisbaena, Sakit, Ellmac, Bahamut, Viy, and Baphomet. I've unlocked the Philosophers, have all four seals, most of the items, the ability to generate money fairies without fail, and there's still a ton left to do. 19 hours of play with plenty more to go, I think.

The updated Baphomet fight was awesome and really wasn't that hard, at least compared to Viy or Bahamut.

I want to get back into this, but after wandering around a bunch and growing annoyed at the Twin Labyrinth again I've lost track of the intended first entrance to the Chamber of Birth. Just give me a zone and I'll get to it eventually.

Getting the Dimensional Corridor life crystal was a pretty big pain in the ass, but they changed it so it doesn't *require* the lamp of time, which was nice. I only ever got as far as beating Tiamat in the original, so hopefully I won't get horribly stuck on all the mantras now that this is all new content for me.

I hate the Gate of Illusion (Confusion Gate). Costing me a lot of money in weights to get there and get around.

I did it! La-Mulana beaten! It only took me 22 hours, 20 minutes, and 11 seconds to do it, too! That's better than my first run through in the original, which was 25 hours or so. It was a hell of a ride and I'm a little sad it's over now. Not sad enough to try my hand at Hell Temple though, ohhhhh no. I'm not touching that place with a twelve foot pole, I know my limits.

I would like to thank @harvest for gifting me a copy of the remake of La-Mulana on Playism! SOaTQ.png
My first computer was a Sony HiT BiT MSX, so I'm really interested in playing this game. Shame on me, I didn't know the original version existed until I heard about the remake so the new one will be the first of the two I play.

Did you ever play Maze of Gallious? That's the game the original was heavily inspired by.

Well, pretty much cleared out the Gate of Illusion. There's a bit in the top right you apparently have to come at from the other entrance so I guess I'll get to that later. Got the key that opens up the Infinite Corridor so I guess it's there next.

What I really want to do is open light up the Chamber of Extinction. I can't really get around there because the flares last for such a short time.

La Mulana finished, that was quite a thing. I ended up having to fight the last boss six or seven times after messing it up completely the first time. Wasn't too bad though. I might take a peek at hell temple but i'm pretty sure I won't attempt the whole thing.

Are there some save points you can't warp to? I only just figured out you have to examine the tablets instead of just saving at them for it to work. I'm trying it in the Temple of Moonlight though and I'm still not getting that waypoint.

Those are back areas of the ruins and you need a special piece of software to warp to their grail points.
Said piece of software is in the Graveyard of the Giants. It's mirai.exe and is in the room just outside the Tower of Ruin.

I just got the map for the Shrine of Mother.

I was laughing hard enough that I didn't mind having to trek all the way back to get it a second time.

Made it into the main entrance for the Shrine of Mother. I wasn't laughing during the trek back this time.

Out of curiosity, has anyone reading this managed to beat the game without resorting to a guide?

  • Lavender GoomsLavender Gooms Tiny Bat Registered User regular
I have my doubts about anyone anywhere beating this game without using a guide.

  • Gennenalyse RuebenGennenalyse Rueben The Prettiest Boy is Ridiculously Pretty Registered User regular
I'm sure some crazy person has. But I bet you could count the number of them on one hand.

  • seabassseabass Doctor MassachusettsRegistered User regular
Will it count if I read a guide while playing the original, but have been doing the remake without one? I'm going along at a pretty decent clip having just grabbed this yesterday (I've got access to all of the front-side grail points, gathering strength before doing a boss rush). There are a lot of things that are different, I was quite surprised. I was wicked disappointed that they sort of dumbed down one of the puzzles so far (in valley of the giants).

Could someone give me a hint? I've been stuck for a couple hours and I don't want to look at any walkthroughs. Even the "non-spoiler" one above was too much when I tried to squint at it. I just need a little direction.

I just defeated Ellmec in the Sun Temple. I have two difficult minibosses I can't beat: Inferno Cavern and the Twin Labyrinth. I see the dark cavern but I don't have a light source. I can't figure out the Endless Cavern or Moon Temple. There are still a couple areas and puzzles in the Sun Temple I haven't figured out either. What should my next step be?

Have you found any seals yet? That would be a good place to start. Also, if you don't have a flare gun, you might want to try and get it. Turns out that not only will it do damage, but it can actually be used for it's nominal purpose (a light source).

I have two seals. I don't know where the flare gun is...

[squinting at GameFAQs] Okay, that's kind of stupid. Was I supposed to know about that hidden room? I thought in the rerelease they got rid of most of the ridiculous stuff where you need a walkthrough to even know about it. Up until now, the game has been pleasantly straightforward.

No, there are a lot of things that I've only got because I happen to remember my last playthrough. Whip all the walls.

Also, I recommend beating all of the bosses you can. That will open up more of the map to you. I think you're further along than me in certain respects, as I haven't found a miniboss in the inferno cavern... or at least I can't remember one.

My current goal is the double jump... I can remember what item I need to beat the guy guarding it... I even sort of remember where it is, but I can't figure out how to get it...

Anyone want to remind me how to get the
    serpent staff

Let me rephrase. I know where it was originally. I know how to get there, but where the box used to be, now there is just a pedestal to place a stone, which I did... so... is it still in this area, or has it been moved somewhere new entirely?

I got about halfway through the game with only occasional guide intervention but now I'm basically living in the wiki pages. What really gets my goat about this game, other than simply losing patience with writing so much stuff by hand, is how impossible it is to know whether or not you're equipped to solve a particular puzzle. If I see a chest I can't open, it might be a puzzle I should be able to figure out now, or it might be something that requires information that's written god knows where, or it might require an item I'll find in 5 hours, etc etc. So basically the only reasonable approach to solving the puzzles is to just constantly explore the entire ruins with a fine tooth comb again and again until something somewhere works, then rinse and repeat hoping that something else has opened up now.

While squinting on the wiki pages I heard that this has moved in the rerelease. They suggested talking to the Elder or that Mulbark creature for hints.

There's something you need to whip in the first room of the Chamber of Extinction (the dark place). It's a piece of wall with a round symbol on it. If you can find that, you'll unlock something important in the Sun Temple.

In regards to the Serpent's Staff:
Look for the room with many Anubis. I think you've opened that up.

Thanks, that's just what I needed. It will open up a lot more of the game for me. Maybe I would've found that on my own had I known to attack every funny looking wall from the beginning of the game (Wolfenstein 3D style!) So I'll give the game a pass on that one.

I have an overwhelming urge to check a walkthrough. I do get a thrill when I figure something out on my own. But it's a cheap thrill, like an adventure game.

I wrote down all the things I can't figure out or do yet or in the game. I came up with 27 items. Figuring out which one way I need to proceed is like finding a needle in a haystack. Except the needle is probably lying on the ground a hundred yards away.

At this point I've caught enough glimpses of spoilers I'm probably safe to check the "non-spoiler" walkthrough listed above.
