OBAMA APPROVAL RATING WITH GRADE SCHOOL STUDENTS PLUMMETS

So, Barack Obama has proposed to lengthen the school day in America by three hours, and virtually eliminating summer and winter breaks. Many parents, nearly 55% of those polled, are STAUNCHLY against this, claiming their children are already over-worked and have little time to socialize with their friends, while those who support the change say that the longer school day would produce longer time with teachers, which would make learning easier, and longer time in class to get work done which would mean less home-work.
Personally, I support quality over quantity as far as education goes. More time in class won't help if the kids still don't want to learn, and longer school days/less time off would mean a higher drop-out rate. What we need to do is put a higher emphasis on vocational schools, once the kids have graduated, and leave universities and colleges for arts degrees and shit, which is what they were for pre-1980's, so I'm told.
would lengthening it by three hours make it longer than a work day?
around here schools go from 8 to 3
making them last an extra three hours would push it to ten hours, yeah
basically ensuring that whatever classes that take up the last three hours should basically be written off and also a lot of school activities would probably have to shut down
also fuck getting rid of summer vacation, I just went to a college for basically two years non-stop only having breaks at christmas and it fucking sucked
Obama just wants to find time for his socialism, communism and fascism classes
Not to mention Goose Stepping lessons and holy qur'an readings.

That would suck. We should just do away with the no child left behind bullshit and keep working on improving the quality of schools. Maybe change things within them as opposed to making a fuckin 10 hour day.
edit: also summer vacation is such a huge part of a lot of kid's lives. A chance to relax and be kids, damnit. Although I guess it sucks for the kids with abusive parents or the ones too poor to eat at home.
I can sorta see the arguments for ending summer breaks. But there is absolutely no way school kids can stay awake through another 3 hours of class a day. That'd add up to 40-45 hours a week, the average college kid isn't even doing more than 14ish most semesters.
How does the plan factor in added costs for keeping a school open that long? I know all three high schools in our small town district have cut school days, switched from quarters to trimesters to keep things going smoothly, and cut teachers too. I'm not necessarily against longer school days, but taking away summer and winter break sounds crazy. Now if there were more options available for summer education, say like an option to take AP classes or such, that'd be great, but it'd still be optional. Just like in our *community* college ... sure you could take another round of classes for a couple months, but no one expects it.

more arts and crafts? crossword puzzles and word finds that relate to the topics? no way it could be filled with actual learning that would hold on to a student's attention after already being in class for 7 hours
I don't know how long your summer break is. Two months? Cut off two weeks for like, evaluation and speedy catchup and makeup tests. But honestly worst school related idea I've ever heard.
Actually, know what'd work better than 3 extra hours a day? Smaller class sizes, makes a world of difference. I've been in everything from 2 up to 32.
I went to a year-round school for fifth grade. It was actually pretty sweet because instead of the three months off in the summer you got a two week break every couple of months. The three extra hours is retarded and I can't imagine any teachers being down for that, let alone fucking students.

Well, President Bush increased the size of the Department of Education to three times its previous size, maybe some of that money could be reappropriated.

Yeah, a good number of teachers are for it. If nothing else, they stand to see an increase in pay.
Is the point that you are supposed to be taught more things or that you should have more time to learn the things currently being taught?
I dunno, this doesn't sound like it will solve any relevant problems.
I can see not having such long breaks, though. It's probably hard for many kids to get into the studying mentality after being away for several months and I bet many people think it's shitty to start working after being a student because of being used to those breaks.
And instead of having to pile work on the kids to do at home with the hope that they do it and absorb the information, you can use the extra time for guided learning in the classroom, where you are there to help them.
It's all well and good that South Korea or whoever has school days that are this long, but I'm not convinced that any of the problems with american education are going to be solved by going to school more.

Ask me in 2 years: Yeah I don't care either way.
I'd prefer the german system, school on saturday but less hours each day.
High school is brutal enough on enough kids. That being said, i'm all for improving schools. Just you know, don't just shovel more hours onto them.
edit: to be clear i've been out of high school for 5 years or something.
would lengthening it by three hours make it longer than a work day?
somewhere around 8:00 or 9:00 AM
yes, yes it would
Well then fuck longer school days right up the ass.

3 extra hours would make it close to or over 10 hours spent in school, this is a horrible idea

I thought America was supposed to be the best and the brightest, but we can't handle as much school as South Korea?
yes, I was thinking the same thing

Have you seen the kinds of MMOs Koreans die playing? Sitting in a chair for 15 hours doing mind-numbing tasks is what they're built for.
Think of the money this will save on babysitters!
