Oh, my parents, tireless bargain hunters they. Found a nice old iBook for less than most pay for an iPhone case. But despite a thorough cleaning, it retains a most peculiar aroma, which I rather imagine they would like to be rid of. Any thoughts on how one might go about this?
You have two options and you might even need to combine the two:
1.) Disassemble the machine and clean out the cracks. If the previous owner wasn't the cleanest person around, the seams could be holding captive an unsavory crust.
2.) Use an ozone deodorizer. I don't know how safe this is on electronics, but it's a weapon of choice for deodorizing all kinds of things where cleaning is impossible or impractical.
Once had a Dell 9300 that smelled like an ashtray, but after opening it up and cleaning the keyboard and vents it was back to new. I don't know how easy it is to crack open an Apple machine, but there's sure to be tutes somewhere on the net. It might even sound better once you clean the fans up.
Try CyberClean, its like this goo stuff you stick on your keyboard and it pulls all sorts of crap out and supposedly kills bacteria and stuff too. I'd assume since it kills bacteria it probably has some sort of flowery/lemony smell to it as well since most stuff that does seems to these days.
Put a couple of those scented dryer sheets in the laptop and close the lid, then lightly spray a towel with some febreeze then wrap the towel around the laptop for a couple of days, the longer the better.

But probably a losing war. Just use it a lot til your nostrils are inured. Little patience and it`s happy days all over again.
