Is anyone planning on getting this? It comes out later this month. Honestly, I haven't really liked a Smackdown game since Here Comes the Pain, however I'm thinking about getting this one simply because that one is so out-of-date.
I just wanted to get a thread up to discuss the game and the features before it actually comes out! All information that you would need, really, is on the official page...although it loads really slowly and lags my system pretty bad.
Man creating an entrance is hard enough, create a storyline? I'd rathjer they just put a good storyline it, its not like its that hard to createa story that lets me be a bad ass or a villain.
They REALLY need to get a new developer on this series.. There's animations that if not they're not the same ones from the first one, are just barely retouched.
HtCP was pretty much the pinnacle of the series, though the first Smackdown vs. Raw was good too.
It seems that everytime they do something that I enjoy, it gets removed in a later version. I really liked the ability to pause and rotate the camera in the middle of a finishing move with one button press. That was neat. I also really liked the Elimination Chamber in Here Comes the Pain but in later versions, you couldn't even see what was going on. It was a clusterfuck.
Honestly, I don't really care about CAW stuff. I never want to take the time to do it anyway. I just want a multiplayer mode that is fun that I can do with a couple of buddies.

I'm probably going to get this. I love CAWs. I think it would be fun if we created a PA Federation.
EDIT: Zach Ryder and Yoshi Tatsu better be unlockable characters.

Two other things that have me interested in this:
1) Clothes are now supposed to be actual 3d objects instead of being painted on
2) You can supposedly edit and save outfits for existing Superstars, so maybe I can have a masked Kane in my story.
Though they removed the layer system for CAWs in favor of some sort of point system. I'm curious to see how that works out. I kind of liked the layer system.
I aint played a wrestling-licensed game since WWF: War Zone (I rocked at that game) but yeah i'm thinking of getting it. It just looks really, really, really good

All you can alter is the color of the outfits. You can't change the actual clothing.
I agree this needs to go to a new developer, the anims have been the same anims for years. It's like Madden only at least madden makes sure players catching a ball looks right.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
From an earlier write up on the CAW section, it seems sorta retarded.
See, now every article of clothing, design piece, etc, is assigned a point value. Something like 1-20. And you only have a certain amount of points to use all together. This seems to have been done to keep people from making super insane characters that would chug things along if playing online.
The thing is that A) Until you place the clothing on your character, you don't see how many points it is. And secondly, there doesn't necessarily be a template to simply judge how much everything is. Not all tights are worth five points for example. Some are more, some are less, and some don't even take any points.

According to IGN, though, this only really stops you from doing really weird things with the more gimmicky costume pieces. Most things apparently cost little to no points, and the logos/designs cost none at all(and you can finally create your own designs).
The late 90's, early 2000 had such a packed roster that I don't think it will ever be lived down. PPV's around that time were packed with entertaining stuff from down to top.
The current roster is much better than it was just a couple of years back. 2005-2006 was a bad year if I remember right.
As long as this version doesn't have the overtly homosexual HHH storylines.
The thing that sucked hte most was that you were always stuck with the flavour of the month so put your CAW in story mode and you're gonna end up fighting HHH, Batista and John Cena. I'd take a few basic all purpose lines and text dialogue over what we get for a more flexible storyline, one that ideally would incorporate a tag-team/manager path. I would love to play it out like a real storyline and make a tag team on the fly and turn on them if i want or work up to champion. But its hard enough to fucking tag out.
Seriously, 2008, there is NO instruction in the book to tag out which is for the best really because you aint gonna win unless youre in the ring.

Yeah this! Fucking stupid that when you are a tag team, you only control one dude! And the ai for partners is 8 flavors of motherfucking retarded.

I just want all button-mashing removed. There has to be a more finesse way of going about things. I hated that in Here Comes the Pain, despite not being able to break-up submission moves, they came down to who could mash their controller buttons faster. That's not fun.

THQ-published wrestling games have been dead to me since No Mercy. Nothing since then has even come close to delivering the awesomeness that game did. Awesome CAW, awesome multiplayer experience, and--for its time--awesome story mode. It's like they just gave up on trying to make an amazing career mode after a while with the Smackdown series. CAW and career are the only reasons I ever buy wrestling games, and these past few SvR installments have left me desperately wanting. I bought last year's version hoping they'd come to their senses, and yet the game struck no chords with me. No-go on this one.
Edit: And yes, for the love of Christ get some new fucking character animations. I think the underlying factor is simply that Yuke's is a shit developer. Granted, Acclaim's WWF games weren't much better by today's standards. It's just that ever since THQ acquired the license, I've felt like they were cutting corners and short-changing us left and right. AKI's work on No Mercy was the last effort by a wrestling game developer that really impressed me, and I wish they'd start making WWE games again.
A lot of what made the N64 wrestling games great is us all being older, nostalgic and looking back with rose-colored glasses too. The engine was certainly more fun but the games were far from flawless. Clipping problems, the cartridge crashing and erasing all the data, slow down problems, etc.

I never had any of those problems. And for what it's worth, I played No Mercy again a few months ago and enjoyed the hell out of it.
It's like you guys never played WWE DOR on the Game Cube. I stopped playing PS brand games after DOR. The CAW was amazing, and the CAE was second to none. Plus the button configuration was better; no more arm takedowns from the irish whip.

Seriously, give DOR a try.
The problem is, you're one of the four people who bought a GameCube. :P:mrgreen:

Actually, my then GF (now wife) bought it for me! :P
The 50 million people who own a Wii can still enjoy these aged vintage wrestling games. What's your excuse now?

The majority of people who actually own a Wii weren't aware that video games existed back when Gamecube was out.

Touche' good sir, well played. Perhaps we should educate them? Well, never mind, old folks homes given me the creeps. They smell of casuals and death.
I love how every SD thread on every forum since...well the first SD game has been about how much better WM 2000/ No Mercy is.
Hell I'd rplay Attitude or War Zone before I'd play the original SD.
The truth demands repeating; over and over and over...
It's just frustrating from a players POV that they add a feature we love so much, then take it away and replace it with some peace of garbage we could care less about. I guess they aren't allowed to release a perfect wrestling game; we still have people playing N64 Wrestling. Give us the current gen version, and you won't make any money for another 15 years.

Have any of these new ones been good?
Plus the new mode where you create your own storylines can use CAWs.

It's still the best WWF/WWE game released. DoR2 is a distant second, or third if you really like the entrances from WM 2000.
Loved the entrances in WM2000. I blame the Cube games for my disdain towards all the SD releases.

And it gets brought up in every thread, and it won't happen, but THQ just needs to release no mercy as an xbox live arcade and bam, instant money.
