So Hulu decided to pull Seasons 2 and 3 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer off the air, which drove me into a frenzy of Internet television watching which I completed a week or two ago. This leaves me at Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 4/Angel Season 1 which I think I'll start watching sometime soon. I understand that there are crossovers between the two shows and stuff so I'm wondering if there's some sort of order I should watch them in. I don't want to just assume chronological by air time is best, because sometimes episodes get aired out of order on TV. Also, I don't have a list of the episode chronological by airtime, and I don't know how I'd really figure that out.
So, does anyone have an answer? I found this website which has two lists but I don't know if any or both of them are good or what. Also, if you guys could give answers in a spoiler free format, that would be cool, because I've clearly not watched the shows yet so duhhhhhh.
Most of the crossover stuff happens in season 4. So you'll be fine if you just keep alternating between shows as you watch them, except in Buffy season 7 where you need to watch the last episode of Angel season 4 before the end of Buffy season 7.
Okay, more in depth for the OP... just season 4 and Angel season 1...
Buffy Ep. 3: Harsh Light of Day leads into Angel Ep. 3: In the Dark
Buffy Ep. 8: Pangs leads into Angel Ep. 8: I Will Remember You
Buffy Ep. 15: This Years Girl leads into Angel Ep. 18: Five by Five
You don't need to go from Buffy 15 to Angel 18 though, it's a progression that happens naturally.

While they were both on the WB, they aired the same night, back to back, Buffy followed by Angel. This will be good enough for Buffy 4&5/Angel 1&2. The next two seasons are a bit trickier, since Buffy moved to UPN, while Angel stayed on the WB. Though, for the most part, the crossovers stopped at this point too, which makes it a bit easier.
With B6/A3, start Angel first, and watch three episodes, then proceed as normal.
With B7/A4, start whichever you prefer first, but finish Angel before watching the final two episodes of Buffy.
I really want to do this at some point, watch both shows in chronological order. There are lists out there, like this one, but I'm sure there are better.
For what it's worth, I just watched Buffy straight through and then Angel straight through and it was fine.
Almost better because you get reminded of the earlier seasons of Buffy while watching Angel.
This is what I did. It seems silly to go back and forth between two different shows.
It's what I did too... changing a DVD every episode would make me want to kill myself. Hell, even if they were in a multi-DVD changer it would be too annoying.
Frankly, I don't think the minuscule sense of continuity you would achieve is worth it.

Well, I have four different devices that can play DVD's hooked up to my TV, so it really wasn't any more difficult than switching the video source between each episode.
I tend to watch Buffy straight through, then Angel, but with B5/A2, it did kind of spoil big plot events from Angel. It's ideal to watch them Buffy then Angel for each episode, and since you're on Hulu, it's not really a problem. So you should probably do that.

And honestly, for me, even switching the video source is too much effort for what little continuity there actually is. The only place I think it's even slightly worth it is the Buffy Thanksgiving episode to the Angel episode... every place else it's just meh...
Except maybe the Angel season 4 finale to the Buffy series finale, but even then...
And I am a huge Whedon fan... I'm just not an anal retentive one.

Watch Angel and to hell with Buffy because Buffy sucked after the first couple of seasons but Angel was awesome the whole way through.
Are you kidding? Season 1 of Buffy is terrible in comparison to the later seasons. I'm one of those messed up people who really enjoyed seasons 5-7, though.
Watching Buffy 7/Angel 4 together is pretty cool, even though 4 was sort of a crap factory.
I watched Angel all the way through and actually stopped in the middle of season 5 because I found it so boring. Pre-season 5 is much better in my opinion.
But then I liked the later seasons of Buffy a lot, so I might be weird.

Oh man, you missed the best stuff. Season 5 does start out slow, but the last half is filled with so much awesome, it will melt your face.
I watched all of Buffy first and will get around to Angel one of these days. Obviously, I can't speak for Angel, but Buffy is fine without watching Angel. There are a few parts here and there where you know something must have happened in Angel that effected the current plot of Buffy, but it still all makes sense.
Also, seasons 1-3 were the best with 4 also having a lot of awesome and a lot of lame. I liked 5-7, too, though and "It eats you starting with your bottom" is a phrase used in my house every chance we get (which is more often than you might think).
Did you know if David Boreanaz ever has sex he'll turn into Robert Pattinson? Gypsy curse.
I would suggest you watch the episodes staggered, if for no other reason than that otherwise you really start to miss Angel about halfway through Buffy season four.
Posts
So watch Buffy 4-1, then Angel 1-1, and so on.

Do... Re... Mi... So... Fa.... Do... Re.... Do...
Forget it...
Buffy Ep. 3: Harsh Light of Day leads into Angel Ep. 3: In the Dark
Buffy Ep. 8: Pangs leads into Angel Ep. 8: I Will Remember You
Buffy Ep. 15: This Years Girl leads into Angel Ep. 18: Five by Five

If you're a hardcore Whedon fan, it's worth it.
Otherwise watch Buffy first, and Angel second.

Season 4 of Angel would like a word with you.
That shit was atrocious.
And then for Season 5 they were like "Hey it started sucking ass, let's change everything about the show"
Normally that wouldn't work at all. Somehow they made it work beautifully.

yea 4 was... well was fucking weird. Had some good episodes but yea.. a bit creepy weird. Season 5 man.. that was gold, only wish they did more.
Well, the combat is attrocious, and the effects poor. Oh, and the witty banter barely exists.
The storylines are not bad though.
Season 2 has Spike and Dru and Angelus. That is when shit gets awesome. If only faith had been there to play too.....
But then I liked the later seasons of Buffy a lot, so I might be weird.

although you do need to watch The High School Years of Buffy before you can watch any angel.
and it might help to know Spike's character arc before the last season of Angel
