Hey, thanks guys. I don't have every song on the album online, but my Myspace has a good chunk of them. Of the songs on that page, the only two that aren't from that album are "Discredited" and "Game." I also have a bunch of information about the music at www.rigelvii.com. I even made tab for everything, just because.
No worries at all, man - and I'm really flattered that you like the music. It's been like pulling teeth, getting anyone to listen to it. Maine isn't exactly "connected" as far as anything of a music scene goes, you know?
Oh, and for the hell of it, let's add in something completely different from the same album. Not nearly as complex or layered. Totally different sound. I still like it, though:
(Shit, how do I embed YT video here? Not allowed? I think I've seen it before.)
I was listening to some of my older stuff today, and there was this one electronic-y song I wanted to share with you guys - it's bouncy, and it's got some guitar in it too. I think I made this...three years ago? Maybe four. I want to rework it for my next album, maybe, as an instrumental track.
I think it's more a case of "makes good music, shitty comic." But believe me, if I could work the comic as a marketing scheme for the music, I would - it's hard as hell getting even local attention.
I feel like my comic thread has made people reluctant to dig in my music thread, which is sadness. Because although I'm stubborn about my silly little comic, the music is something, well, different.
I think there are just less of us here that have any expertise in music. From what I hear, the songs are pretty cool, I cant really offer any crits, though, I wouldn't know what the hell I was talking about.
You wouldn't happen to have any interest in making some music for a poor animation students thesis, would you? :winky:

Well, it depends on what kind of music you need, length - stuff like that. I'm really bad with priorities, but if it sounds like something I'd be able to do, I'd definitely give it a shot.
When I have a working animatic, I'll talk to you about it. So far my only idea is to make it work with super limited sound/ambient noise as I have no musical talent.
On a music note, I'm pretty stoked because I got a local paper to do an article on my album. It took them...five month?...to get around to it, but it was above the fold in the arts section, which is fine by me. Now if only I could get a local radio station to play the damn thing.
Man, this stuff is as good as Mr Stinky is bad. I'm glad you're getting some exposure. It's sort of a joy division/manson sort of thing.
My only recommendation would be a little more variety in your vocal dynamics. From having listened to a couple of songs, you do the 'rasping whisper' vocal very well (and even as I've typed this Shh Don't Tell came on and proved me all wrong).

You know, that's just about the only statement I can think of that would make me think "I hope the comic is the worst thing he's ever seen."
And yeah, I'm definitely still working on broadening my vocals. Right now, I've mainly got the "high, loud shouty" vocals and the "low, raspy" ones. I'm still shocked that I'm singing at all, because a little over a year ago I was still afraid to record my voice.
not my kind of music, but a lot more recognizable effort.
good luck with it man.
Thanks, Bwanie. I've been making music a lot longer than I've been making that comic, so I really think this is more of a ... mature creation? But hell, I'm still working on getting better at music.I don't know that I'll ever consider it "good enough" that I won't notice things I want to fix when I come back to a track after a few months away.
what do you use for your drums and stuff? I've got guitar and bass recording stuff already but i have no drumming ability/equipment and i'm looking for a (preferably free) sequencer

I do all my mixing and whatnot in FL Studio, so everything I don't actually play an instrument for (mainly drums and bass) is sequenced in there. For drums, I usually stack two samples for each drum (I have some samples I've collected personally, and I also have a set of wavs from old drum machines). I usually make basic patterns with kick / snare / 2 toms / hat / crash. Brickwall compressor, everything routed through a single mixer channel, bit of reverb, and maybe a little distortion to crunch it up some. I try to avoid fills or anything complicated that won't work convincingly as a loop. Then I mix everything until the "fake" parts don't really call attention to themselves, or at least sound good with the song. I stick with a big, 80s type drum sound usually, because it's harder to fake a tasteful "realistic" kit.
Example: the drum and bass from one of my new songs, exported straight from the arrangement with everything else turned off.
It may be just me, but the hihats are a bit overpowering. Especially because it sounds like the one sample the whole way through. I would suggest maybe having a couple of different types of hits for the hihats.
It sounds better with the rest of the mix intact, but yeah, I typically try to vary velocity and pitch slightly, and also use a couple of different samples.
...or were you talking about one of the earlier songs?
The recorded vocals are really good. Have you soundproofed the room you recorded vocals in?
I actually record them into cheap mic (PG48) on my desk and clean up the audio using iZotope RX (amazing intelligent noise canceler / other useful stuff).
The great thing about it is that once you learn how to train it to your noise profile, you can basically make it so that any artifacting completely vanishes in the mix.
Link in first post has Manson-esque vocals, circa Mechanical Animals. It's a little meandering but the mood was good. I kinda liked it. It's like the song a band would play between two of their better songs. The YT video track was a little generic though. Do more of this and less of that. This being music, that being everything else.

I'm doing a lot of this lately - in fact, I did some of this today and yesterday. I'm getting a bass tomorrow (I hope), and once I get that set up I'll start to integrate some grooves and better bass riffs. Goal being to make each track theoretically a little better than the one before it.
the Type o negative sounding first one was great, the song in the video not so much.
a pro mix on your stuff would make really polish it - although its decent now. The instruments seem to sit too far apart from each other in the mix + the drums do sound very mechanical. Maybe time to get a real drummer + id push teh bass up a bit (but that might just be my sound setup that i dont hear it so well)
good stuff tho
firegolem on
I got nothing to sitewhore. Go here instead: www.nmcf.co.za

Yeah, the second one was a one-off - a quick and dirty one I did for fun. I do like it, but not in the same way as the more polished tracks.
I'm definitely still learning how to mix things. I know a true pro would be able to sit down and point out all the things I did wrong. Even now, with my next album, I'm figuring out new tricks. And the bass really is a little low - I used to have a problem with making the bass too loud to compensate for my setup (I couldn't really hear the bottom 100hz that well), and that song in particular is a bit much in the opposite direction (too little bass).

though i had to turn around and say to bombardier,

(Shit, how do I embed YT video here? Not allowed? I think I've seen it before.)
Anyway, decent MP3 is here, and YT video is here
EDIT: shit, so that's how it works. Try to post a link and it embeds it for you.
Anyway, this is the song.

Music: Awesome.
I am confused. But good work!
I think that's becoming the theme for this thread. I'll take it - at least one of the things I do is decent, right? :P
