My carpet cleaner is getting on in age and it smells some.
Anyone have any good suggestions on how to remove the smell from the Bissel?

Does your carpet smell or the cleaner itself? If its the carpet I'd say buy some of that powder stuff you can sprinkle on carpet before you vacuum it up.

no the cleaner, i haven't used it in our brand new house yet because it smells.

i need to wash it out with something, i am really thinking febreeze but not sure how well it will work since the insides are plastic and not a porous material .

Plastic is a porous material, that's why it's holding a smell. Try washing it out with a weak bleach solution, letting it sit and soak for a while then thoroughly rinsing it so you don't end up with bleach in the carpet the next time you use it.
