I played the original tech demo for World of Goo (Tower of Goo), a few years back, and thought to myself "Wow, this is really neat, I wonder what could happen if they made a proper game out of this, I bet it could be fantastic."
That's exactly what 2D Boy have done, and it is fantastic.
It feels, and plays, like a very contemporary update to lemmings. It even has moments where you get to destroy everything on screen as a cathartic release from failing a level, before you give it one more go. The controls are brilliant, the animation is lovely, and the presentation is brilliant. The music is brilliant, it feels like it's not quite right, but that is part of the charm. Reminds me of Worms actually.
It is literally just about getting things from A to B. Although it's very post-portal. That's not a criticism at all, it has a lot of similarities with portal, but it really has it's own identify.
It's genuinely hilarious. Not just hilarious though, hilarious in a very game-y way. It has a wonderful character, 'The Sign Painter', who is consistently surprising, and consistently brilliant. Some of the scenarios are very witty, and very knowingly used.
All the humour, style and polish in the world won't make a fun game if the game isn't fun to play.
Luckily, World of Goo is fun fun fun fun fun.
The puzzles are very well constructed. They are always fair, and always logical. If you are anything like me, you'll spend about half the time working out what you have to do, and half the time working out how to do it. There is a lot of trial and error involved, but experimenting with different solutions is always a joy. It's very conducive to group play, taking turns.
World of Goo is a triumph of game design, and a breath of fresh air. Exactly what WiiWare needs, and a commendable indie effort.
It's an obvious conclusion, but thinking with Goo is the thinking with portals of 2008.
You sound like a shill. I want to hear someone other than you say nice things about it.
Depends. Right now, to celebrate it's first birthday, it is available for anywhere between $0.01 and $∞. Offer is good til the 19th of October. Go get!!!
I would love this game so much more if I were any good at it. Still, it's worth the full price I paid for it, and anyone who even THINKS about paying just 1 cent for this should be ashamed.
Also the music really is one of the best things about it. Observe;
This is one of the best indie games I've ever played, and I'm not that into puzzle games either. It seems hard at first, but it's built in a really intuitive manner that never gets frustrating or too obtuse. It also keeps changing gameplay mechanics to keep things fresh - come to think of it, it's kind of like the puzzle equivalent of Half-Life 2.
Plus, it has what is seriously one of the best soundtracks of the past decade or so. The meta-plot is also surprisingly interesting, and very creative. I can't recommend it enough.

Has anyone purchased the Mac version? Does it run the same as the Windows side? (I downloaded the Windows demo on Steam, but if it runs just fine on OS X, then I'll get that instead.)
Sold. I'm terrible at the demo but I still wanted it. I was waiting for another sale of some sort (missed the last Steam one) so $10 seemed morally acceptable to me.

<AtlusParker> Sorry I'm playing Pokemon and vomiting at the same time so I'm not following the conversation in a linear fashion.
This is a really fun game. I had some trouble going through the levels the first time, but with a bit of creative thinking, I didn't find it too difficult. On the other hand, from time to time I go back and try and do a level to try and get the OCD flag and holy hell some of them are ridiculous. I think I have only 7 or 8 levels OCDed. Its pretty insane.

The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it. ~ Terry Pratchett
Fuck everyone that paid less than 20 bucks....
:c00lbert:
Damn it. Wrong forum.
Still, I am paid 20 bucks when it came out.
Buy the game. Give them 5 bucks or so. If you pay only a few pennies, you should rot in hell. Just consider the server costs are probably a nickle or so.
I got this game on Steam a while back and enjoy it thoroughly. I didn't realize the soundtrack was available for free, but sadly I can't get to it right now because of this deal.
Having to go through the whole CC payment process just for one cent seems like a huge pain in the ass for both me and the seller. In fact, wouldn't it technically end up costing them money if I only paid $0.01 what with the transaction fees?

That's why you're a jerk if you pay less than $1.
I think I'm going to pay $10. I had enough fun with the demo to get the cost of a movie ticket out of the full game.

Yes, it would cost them money. I think their idea is that if you are willing to do a credit card transaction, you'd be willing to buy it from them at a reasonable cost rather than a penny.
Don't buy it for a penny. This game is too good. I want more from these guys. Give them a few bucks.
i bought it for $5. I may send them another $5 later on if I find it is an amazing game.
But I got no email, and when I try to use the manual email bot it says it can't find my order.

Nope, you get a DRM free download.
I love that when you find out Kyle and Ron used to work at EA, the "world of goo corp" makes even more sense.
Read my book. (It has a robot in it.)
I KISS YOU!
Which is ironic, seeing as only a jerk would pay just a penny for it.
hopefully this isn't due to an influx of jerks paying one penny
Well it's still better than pirating it completely, this gives people an absolution for their sins.
I KISS YOU!
That would be sweeeet.

It's the limited time ones I struggle with the most. The "get X number of goo" and "X number of turns" I find much easier.
Buy it.

shocking
I'll probably pay $3. That should offset server costs and still give them some moneys.
I had to refresh the page a few times to get through, but after that it was a breeze.

Your offering is not sufficient.
Edit: Using this system, not standard buying on Steam. I have it already, but for $5 I see everyone I know getting a copy.
Well, puzzle games usually don't have multiple endings, so I'm not sure your gripe is really justified.
I like how you get the install files for all OSes. Can't wait to play this.
Can't wait for the iPhone version too...
