note: this is quick and dirty: to be spruced up later
Because of
Helloween's pretty fantastic Let's Play of this awesome game, enough interest has been sparked to get some multiplayer going. In the only official patch System Shock 2 ever received, a 4-man co-op mode was added in.
While it only functions via direct IP, through the magic of
Hamachi, we can play this shit over the internet.
This was created to avoid derailing Helloween's thread, and to maybe stave off the spoiler bullshit going on over there.
Having personally played this through co-op a couple years ago, it's an experience that is significantly different than solo play. It becomes more about resources and balancing who's-got-what over just shitting yourself. Ideal number is 3, but 4 is the max and likely what we'll roll with.
Because of this, I'd recommend playing through the game solo before playing co-op.
Current list of dudes who have expressed interest:
Mustachio Jones - EST -
PeregrineFalcon - EST
Antithesis
subedii
Tamin
Dartboy - PST
If you've got the balls to play with other people, we need two things: Hamachi account name, and your time zone. This will make it so we can get the ball rolling faster. Likely we'll end up using Vent for voice chat, as the in-game communication is limited to text.

We're in Hamachi and Vent, waiting on you.

Hell yeah. Took a bit of tweaking, and there's some bugs (corpses staying standing, for example) but it was good times.
I'm thinking we might want to find and install the multiplayer difficulty mod though if we're going to do more than two-player runs ... if there's four of us all specialized in Shit We Do Well, it's going to be a massacre.

It's attached to the first post of this thread at StrangeBedfellows.
I highly suggest the SS2 Mod Manager as well, so that you can activate/deactivate it as needed. But in order for people to play together, they all have to have the mod on or off. No partials.

I don't think I've got anyone bothering me today, and my network problems should be all good.
40kb/s is plenty to game on, even modern games with voicechat.

Come on, you know you want to club space sploicers with wrenches.
Or, alternatively, shoot Tamin in the back when he thinks that the Psi user is supposed to be a Battlemage :P

I can't really remember the steps I took to get it there, but let me poke through and see some of my common settings.
I'm on Win7 x64 RC1, here's what works.
Note that you will likely need to run SS2 as admin. It seems to be unstable without it - and it's been solid whenever I've run as admin. Probably the video codec dealybobber.
1. Install System Shock 2 from CD. You'll need to launch it from a command prompt with setup.exe -Lgntforce
2. Install Kolya's SS2Tool.
2a. DDFix did not work for me - it crashed out. You may need to use the manual version from Timeslip's site here. If you need a freeware hex editor, XVI32 is a champ.
3. Install the SS2Mod Manager.
4. Run System Shock 2. Set your control scheme up properly.
5. Exit SS2, and launch SS2MOD. Apply the "Use-Fire Fix" and do not open your control config page again or you will need to reapply it.
6. If you have video/cutscene problems, follow the troubleshooting steps here.

Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
