HANDS-ON IMPRESSIONS FROM POPULAR SITES
“...it’s an understatement to say that Red Dead Redemption is in my wheelhouse. Each time Rockstar swings by the office to give us a glimpse my enthusiasm increases, so it was with great anticipation that I took hold of the revolver for our first hands-on session… As the sun sets, a smoky haze falls over the battlefield and I take a moment to appreciate the amazing vista where this fight is taking place. The impressive desert setting looks like it’s ripped straight out of an Albert Bierstadt painting. Gorgeous landscapes like this aren’t uncommon in Red Dead – every location I’ve seen thus far is equally awe-inspiring… The gunplay is nothing if not visceral – the weapons pack a serious punch, and the Natural Motion animation further cements the feeling that you wouldn’t want to be on the other end of these gun barrels… My experience with Red Dead Redemption has me chomping at the bit to spend more time in the gritty Western setting.” – Game Informer
“It's a classic Rockstar moment. The nocturnal calm is shattered by the shrieks of a prostitute bursting out of a saloon as a man chases her down and assaults her in the street. I move swiftly to her aid but, still acquainting myself with the controls, succeed only in kicking her in the face as she writhes helplessly on the ground. The man flees back inside as the girl scrambles to her feet and away. I give chase to the attacker, drawing a rifle as he cowers behind the bar blind-firing. A moment later I have him clean in my sights by the open backdoor and unload a round. Which sails past his torso, through the door, over the street and into the stomach of a girl 20 yards away, who drops to her knees with a blood-curdling scream. The same girl I'd been trying to save. There are belly laughs and there are belly laughs. It's one of those sudden, unexpected climaxes of bloody action, tinged with darkly comic absurdity, that have become a trademark of Rockstar's open-world exploits… There's so much more to say. I could talk about the vulture-shooting mini-game; the deliciously cruel potential of the lasso; the bad, bad thing I did in a church; collapsing unconscious in a bar after caning two shots of hard liquor (eerily similar to my own tolerance). And then there's multiplayer, which, according to Rockstar, will be part of the next reveal. I could go on, but like Grand Theft Auto, the joy is in the discovery and individual experiences.” – Eurogamer
“Every time I see Red Dead Redemption, I get just a little bit more excited. The most recent hour I spent with Rockstar's open-world Western afforded me the opportunity to get my hands on it for the first time… If you haven't been paying attention to Red Dead Redemption, you should start right now… My favorite moments, though, were those gunfights that took place out in the open. Nothing says badass cowboy like a guy with no regard for his life or safety. It isn't all that easy to pull off without getting filled with lead, but every now and then you can do a slow walk up to a guy and blast him at close range or take a knife to his throat. You might prefer to use a long range rifle or a Molotov cocktail, but I'd call you a wimp… There are a lot of great looking games on the horizon in 2010. Some will wind up being hits. Others may end up being duds. Red Dead Redemption is on track to be a hit. It's beautiful. It handles well… it already looks like a winner. Mark your calendars for the end of April. You've got a date with the Wild West.” - IGN
"Red Dead Redemption is fast becoming the absolute benchmark for not only this budding genre, but for sandbox/openworld games period... Every step you take in the game reveals something new, something hidden and ultimately, something exciting. We haven't been this amped to sink our teeth into a product of this nature in a long time." - Ausgamers
"Initially it's hard to take in just what an amazing technical achievement Red Dead Redemption is. This is due, in part, to the fact that everything in Rockstar's new open-world game looks so familiar. In the hands-on time we're given, a simple walk through a one-horse town at night is all that it takes to put us right into the world of the Wild West. The wooden buildings look battered, but solid. Horses tethered up at a water trough whinny and snort. A bar at the end of the street emits a warm light as well as the sounds of drunken laughing and a piano. Saloon doors creak as patrons pass through them. A soft breeze blows tumbleweed across the path. The night air is filled with the chirruping chorus of crickets and the sound of our footfalls mingles the crunch of gravel and the jingling of boot-spurs. Every single thing on the screen and every noise on the soundtrack is note-perfect in its recreation of the Wild West scenery we all remember from films. It washes over the player, immersing them completely. The world building job that Rockstar Games has done with Red Dead Redemption is, to put it bluntly, incredible" - The Telegraph
"Dead Eye is the system that ostensibly marvels how much of a badass Marston is. It's the mechanic that lets you slow down time and take out fools rapidly... One small tweak I like with Dead Eye is that when the slow-motion effect runs out, it takes an extra second to transition from slow-to-normal. That extra second usually translates into seeing your foes keel over and die in slow-motion for just a little bit longer. It doesn't prolong a death animation in an annoying fashion; it gives you an extra ounce of satisfaction to see a slick death scene in slow-motion for just a little longer." - 1UP
"Its grand vistas look incredible, but it's when you focus on the small details that you realise what really makes the game world live and breathe. Attention to detail is everywhere: grass sways in the breeze, the canvas walls of tents flutter. Vultures circle above dead bodies and the horizon - to which you can travel should you wish - shimmers under a heat haze... right now, Red Dead Redemption is shaping up to be one of the cold-eyed killers of 2010." - MSN
“Red Dead Redemption goes that extra mile we’ve come to expect from a Rockstar-developed game and presents a world full of unique characters that are roundly developed and given compelling dialogue to act out… everything, from the storyline, to the settings, to the graphics (watch the muscles in a horse’s haunches flexing—it’s mesmerizing),appears to be living up to those lofty expectations extremely well. Red Dead Redemption is due to hit store shelves in April, and after this up-close look, the game looks more exciting than ever.” – Team Xbox

I'm quite excited for this since we havent had a good western shooter in a while. I'm still waiting on a game with multiplayer where you attack/defend a train in a robbery with attackers jumping from horses onto the train
It fucking better not, is all I've got to say

Seriously. The PC port of GTAIV is still disappointing me.

Why we don't have more Old West games I may never know.
As long as it doesn't require stupid extra programs to run (fuckin' Rockstar Social Club!), and they optimize the engine so it isn't complete ass, it'll be okay
Otherwise I might actually have to pass
Which pisses me off because this sounds like my perfect game, almost

Game looks pretty awesome too.
Hookers and sippin' whiskey.
It's the West, man, no one SIPS whiskey.
"The New York dude's downstairs, Al."
"Did he order whiskey?"
"Yup."
"Did he down it, or is he... sippin' at it?"
"He's sippin'."
"Why'd I even ask, huh?"
Read my book. (It has a robot in it.)
Fucking Firefly and Deadwood. This here game has a lot of livin' up to do if it wants to meet the expectations y'all are setting for it.

Not full on San Andreas style dressup, but there will be different outfits for you to switch from. In the trailer, you can see two; his suit, and then his more bandit-type getup. Rockstar's said there'll be more; one's supposed to be a reward for successfully hunting one of each type of animal, I believe.
That's great to hear...rewards exclusive for completing side-quests are awesome.
I hope they have something...permanent you can spend all your cash on. A beef I have with GTA (and most games of this nature) is after you accrue so much ammo you couldn't possibly waste it, there isn't anything worthwhile to spend your cash on. Liquor? After the first few "huh, neat" tries, just like in GTA, it's boring. Same goes for most "meh" cash holes.
Even the clothing options in GTA was limited and once about a tenth of the way through the game, it was done. Money became useless. Variety is king!
As much as I dislike Rockstar, this is probably the best possible contest to have

Oh it's such a nice day, I think I'll go out the window! Whoa!
I think the developer of that Dizzy-ish XBLA game, who posted about it here, already beat us to it.
for Movember anyway. Probably won't win any contests, but I'm excited. Mustache combs and wax form the next month!
You're growing huckleberry?
"I got two guns, one for each of you".
"Well, partner, you thought wrong"

It looks like they nailed the perfect middle ground between Leone and Peckinpah.

A band who, as it happens, need to be featured heavily on the in-game radio stations.
