Help me optimize this laptop

I have a corporate issued laptop.

It's a fairly new dual core Pentium, 4 gigs of ram.

The problem is that the harddrive is goddamn prehistoric. They said the RPM is like 4200 or something insanely low.

And it behaves like it. Despite a great processor and generous RAM, on Windows XP, it chugs horribly.

Obviously, disk access is the problem here.

Any tips for streamlining XP to lean more on the RAM and less on the disk?

*edit* it has also been recently formatted/re-installed.

    No. It was a battle to get them to cough up 40 bucks for the RAM upgrade from 2 to 4.

    How tight are you with your IT department? :P

    Tell them that your drive is "acting funny and making a click noise", bribe them with a case of Mountain Dew, and suddenly you're ridin' 7200rpm spinners, son. :winky:

    It doesn't work like that. This is a huge company and it's pretty much a one-size-fits-all IT department.

    This topic is about optimizing this laptop. Not buying new parts for the laptop.


    "It can't be done", is an acceptable answer, if it is authoritative.

    No. I could not or would not buy my own harddrive, install it into a laptop I don't own, and then ask the IT department to re-install all of the things I need to do any work on it, prompting them to ask me why I tampered with their goddamn computer.
