Mario dies at age 76

LOS ANGELES – Captain Lou Albano, the charismatic professional wrestler who appeared in Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" video, has died. He was 76.

World Wrestling Entertainment confirmed the death Thursday on its Web site.

Albano performed with WWE from 1983 to 1996, when he was inducted into its hall of fame. He began his wrestling career in Canada in 1953.

Albano expanded his fan base greatly when he played Lauper's father in the video for her hit single on a fledgling MTV in 1983. He later claimed to be the catalyst for her success, according to WWE.

You may have known him as Mario from the Mario Super Show.

    I heard he died of an overdose.

    Authorities said at the time of death, he was hooked on the brothers.

    Man, the best part of being a kid was waiting until Friday, where it was pizza day in the cafeteria and then I could run home to see the new Zelda cartoon instead of Mario. Mario was great and all, but come on, Zelda.

    Before the internet, I vaguely remembered seeing part of just one episode when I was awake earlier than usual (they aired it really early here, if at all). I remembered it being the coolest thing I'd ever seen.

    Now I don't know how I got that impression.

    I never liked the Mario cartoon, but the live action parts of the Super Show were awesome. :(

    I did like the Zelda cartoon though.

    Used to love this show. I remember Friday is the day that they'd show the Zelda cartoon, and I'd rush home to see it.

    Sad to see Mario go.

    To me Mario's voice was always exactly like it was in the show. A little gravelly, Brooklyn-ish accent. I was enraged for a year or two when Mario 64 came out.

    I'm pretty sure it's real. The episode I watched had him say it at least 3 times.

    No that is very much real. of course the comedic timing was better in the show and frankly they made Link into a huge horn ball in it too.

    Also I am very saddened by this since I finished watching the complete Super Show/Zelda about a month ago :cry:

    Plus, this was the height of Nintendo Fever. I was high on Nintendo Cereal System for months. I see the DVDs of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show out now, but I don't dare watch them and taint my nostalgic memories.
