The trade mechanic was something Gearbox has stated they'll be looking at adding after release. Gearbox seems pretty hell-bent on keeping loot distribution free-for-all however.
There is a friends list in-game which allows you to easily connect and play with friends. You can set your game up to be public (anyone can join), private (only friends can join), or SP (no co-op). No direct confirmation of Voice-chat, but it wouldn't make any sense for them not to include it.
Yeah didn't mean to scare you like that. You can drop your guns so other mans can pick them up. I was talking more like a dialogue box kinda thing where you can swap stuff around. Thinking about it though, that is probably bit more cumbersome and time-consuming than necessary. Especially if you just need to give your homeboy a single gun, tossing it on the ground and him picking it up works. I was just remembering the video from Giantbomb and it seemed the guy took forever to pick the damn thing up. More of a communication issue there, I think.
It was his own fault really, he dropped a gun accidentally and someone else was fucking with him.

Also I did like how you can have people drop from your game and enemies got weaker (as evidenced by the power going out in the preview and the guys screen doing the diablo 2 thing and mentioning the enemies got weaker with someone leaving).

In a game centered around loot, not having a trade system is pretty bad. Sure, the drop method is serviceable, but it's only really useful when playing with your friends (since I'd never trust a pub to do a fair trade).
All this gun drop/trading talk is interesting - and then the Diablo 2 trading days made me remember my multiple characters...
And then I remembered the good old "Crap this would be awesome for my Pally, but I'm playing my Sorc right now and I have no more room in my stash to come back for it later... DAMNIT gotta drop this in town, in a corner where nobody's likely to see it, then quit the game log in as the new character and return to the same game and town in time before the game host leaves or some chump decides he wants to walk the perimeter of the least interesting town area and stumbles upon my unique boots! OR its lost forever!"
Anyone else remember doing that? I remember asking people to stay in a game for 1 more minute so I could swap characters and get the item in question, more than once the game was gone when I tried to return...
I suppose a way to work around this would be to give it to a buddy then join his game with your other character. But where's the anxiety-laden loading screens in that!!!
Yeah, fixed inventory size with multiple characters...
Look, I'm excited as hell about this game. I really am. I have been since the first trailer, and even more so since they overhauled the graphics. It looks fucking awesome. But they've made some incredibly stupid design decisions in a few places:
Having to manually pick up ammo/cash, even though it's shared.
No trading.
No (apparently) shared inventory space.
Free-for-all loot (as opposed to what-you-see-is-yours, as seen in Hellgate: London, Mythos, Torchlight's forthcoming multiplayer, Black Legion, and Diablo 3).
Like I said: I'm excited, and I can't fucking wait. But some of those design decisions just strike me as blindingly stupid.
I did think it was pretty humorous that rights to ownership was decided via duel :P
Nothin' like a good ol' shootout between friends for the new shiny before rolling out.
And the loser had lower health for the next bit of real fighting CONSEQUENCES!
I liked the vendor machines (hilarious that vendors are actually little machines like fo real) and the woot style sales.
That's actually another portion of the RPG aspect of the game, choices and consequences. Borderlands - catering to all crowds!
Also low on health and enemies drop health packs, the one guy surmized at the cost of cash. I wonder if a dev will confirm that.
Yeah that was actually a neat idea, if that's true. Makes a Roland very useful to everyone then, so health doesn't have to drop as often and give up valuable dollahz. Though I dunno how tight money actually is in the game, seems like the guy in the Giantbomb video had 4-6k at level 8. I wasn't paying enough attention during any video with vendoring to note prices on fine, sundry items (like a hypnotoad cannon).

Along these lines, I'm interested because I'm going to be playing this 2 ways, one online in XBL and one in splitscreen. Will my awesome loot be tradable (read dropped on the ground) to my offline compadre as well as my online cohorts??

Make sure it's hidden, I was such a dick in that game. One time a guy was transferring his (1 rune away) super runeword and I jacked it. He's like "give it back" and I'm all like "not gonna happen." Something about playing the game legit with so much duping and hacking made me so angry, but not angry enough to quit (because I still love D2).
What's the 360 launch discount looking like, I have a few friends I'm trying to sell on this but they're all broke so...
There aren't seperate guys I don't think falling. So the guy you play offline with split screen and the dudes you play with on the xbox will be able to play either.

It's sad I'm seriously considering getting the 360 version on top of the pc version I already bought to play a week early. That's like paying 10 dollars a day to play a game I can't play on the other place.

The ammo/cash thing isn't as bad as it seems in the Giant Bomb video. You don't really have to look at the ground and holding the pickup button collects most things in a radius around you.
The rest I believe/hope will be made up for by the fact that every damn enemy is a pinata stuffed to the brim with loot. If good loot is not scarce, who cares about trading or passing items on to their alts, you'll always have a kickass gun and likely a few more for when you level up.

This is probably the best advice to MMO/RPG players being drawn away from loot douches and general assholes.

Renting it may not be a bad idea. Though I'd just as soon wait until everyone gets together for their first game with the WWB and awkwardly stumble around the game like two sheltered teens.
Sorry I shot you again. My bad. Oops, didn't know meleeing you and then stepping in front of you would start duel. My bad. Oh god I didn't know that was a cliff. Guys how do I shoot manz?!

This is all fine and good, until you start talking about trading rare high-end weapons and suddenly you find the need to trade with people who aren't your "friends". The absence of a decent trade mechanism is terribad. If this is a social game about loot, then there needs to be a system for trading. If this was meant to be a single player experience, or one where the gun drops don't affect gameplay, then this oversight wouldn't matter.

My post was in reference to cheating on the PC, not the lack of a trading mechanic. I understand why drop'n'swap sucks but it doesn't bother me. There must be some reason they did not try to implement it whether it was technical or creative and not just stupidity. I'm thinking more creative since Randy P. seems to love the idea of a "lawless" world.

Space is limited though and you must fill out the RSVP for the party on Saturday October 17th to get in! Borderlands will be fully playable at the party.
Also, you must be 18 or over to attend.
i don't mind the lack of direct loot trading. i only plan to play with fellow WWB pals, so i'm sure we can work something out - like "ok, i'll take this purple, but you get the next one dropped by badass X"
it's not difficult. and because there are a GAZILLION PROCEDURALLY GENERATED weapons, there's no chart of "best ever epic equipment" to grind for. sure, your buddy just found an AWESOME gun. more than likely, you'll also find an AWESOME gun. it'll be different, but still just as cool.
