Came across this sketch from 2014 while making a backup:

    freemansketch2014_zpszzh6xz6q.jpg

Decided to finish it, just to get back to digital painting for a bit.

Anyone else have trouble with Photoshop in combination with wacom tablet and windows 10? My Color picker has an annoying lag to it, making it unpleasant to work.

Love the Lester painting up top. The eyes really came into focus!

Is there a principle you're following with the sort of (pardon me if this isn't a great description...) video edge-enhance rim light I see in the latest piece? It's very interesting, and I don't know if you're observing a real effect, or maybe just playing with an academic color theory I know nothing about! If you're just having fun, that's cool too haha!

Thanks, Mightyhog. It was just an experiment to see if I could lose some edges and smuggle in some extra color. I guess they are there in real life but way more subtle than what I did. Am gonna try and push it further. The video edge-enhance thing is a good point, I didn't make the comparison but now that you mention that it seems obvious.

I don't know what else to say except that your work is really good, and I like it a lot. :D

    Thanks Sublimus.

For every painting I do that I'm happy with there are a good half dozen that just fail horribly.

This is one of the stinkers, will probably be overpainted or trashed.

I like it as a sketch, but I can understand why you would want to paint over it. I would photograph/scan your junkers and experiment on them digitally.

When you paint over things, do you sand down the texture to get a smooth surface again, or do you just put down a new base color and jump in?

  • NatriNatri Registered User regular
That's a good idea, reworking it digitally!

It depends, if it is thinly painted I will just dive right in with new colors, but without a new base layer. I like the happy accidents that occur from underlying, older colors showing through. As in the case above, when there is a lot of palette knife action/thick paint, it is best to sand it down first, otherwise the paint won't adhere for very long (or so I've been told at least).

    Thanks Sublimus!

Two oil studies from last week's portrait drawing class from the model. I hate that there's always a warm spotlight. Would love to do some more natural lighting.

How long do you have the model? Three hours, split between the two paintings? They're both quite suggestive and painterly.

  • NatriNatri Registered User regular
Yes that's right, a three-hour session so about an hour and a half each.

That is a good suggestion Iruka! So far I haven't found any willing candidates, but it's worth pestering my friends over until they cave.

Felt like I was getting too dependant on fancy brushes and textures in my digital work, so did this study with only the basic hard round brush as an exercise.

    aah! I love it.

The whole thing feels really solid, and it lets your color choices take the spotlight. Love the looseness of the whole thing, too.

  • MightyhogMightyhog Registered User regular
Your color shifting is always so pleasing. For some reason I'd love to see you apply the effect to a purely pointillist piece!

    This thread! Ugh! lol

Amazing work! I especially like the last one, and the one from the live model.
