Lion studies and randomness

Hey everyone! A friend of mine wants me to help him illustrate a story he's writing, and it involves a were-lion. I don't usually draw anthropomorphic characters, so I did some quick studies of lions before I made my first attempt at drawing this particular character. Comments and critiques welcome. I know the anatomy of the torso of the actual character sketch is a bit screwy, but I'm working on my anatomy a lot lately.

Anyway, on to art!

First, a color wheel for the hell of it, and failed attempts at learning how to use complementary colors:

Next, very basic frame/skeleton studies, not to scale:

Lion faces:

And the first attempt at the character itself:

Finally, here's just a random little guy that I kind of like:

Sorry about the really crappy contrast; I really have no grasp of how to use digital art programs to edit my works.

I like the more realistic lion designs, but the one wearing jeans is a bit.... well, dumb. I'm very biased against "furry" art, or whatever you'd classify this as, so maybe that's why.

Your random little guy is cool, it looks like a very authentic manga style without being generic.

Yeah... erotic furry art kind of makes me uncomfortable. Is that a bulge I'm seeing? :?

    Hm, conspicuous bulge anyone?

Furry art is ok, but it tends to disturb me and/or be porn.

I like 'were' stuff done where the animal is simply bigger and more intelligent looking, or otherwise different to a normal animal of it's kind. Generally the whole man/wolf thing doesn't work that well.

Also: Those lion studies are pretty good :)

Guys have bulges, though. It's only natural for a drawing of man to have one.

While on the subject of drawing a man, the hips on the lion guy aren't very manly. They're really way too wide. The abs are kind of bizarre, too. They're far too wide, and the lines you choose to represent them are kind of awkward. Same with most of the musculature. Also, the tail connects directly into the spine, so it shouldn't just come out of the middle of his butt. It should be angled down from where the human tailbone is, which is just above the butt itself.

Overall, though, it's not too bad. There's just a lot of awkwardness.
