DX9 vs DX10

I'm considering making the jump from DirectX9 to DirectX10, but first I want to know if it's really worth it. Here are my specs:

2.8ghz Core 2 Duo
nVidia 8800GT
2GB RAM (yeah yeah, low, I know, but two of the sticks I bought didn't want to cooperate)
Windows XP

First of all, I don't even really know if XP supports DX10 at all. But if it doesn't, I have a copy of Vista lying around. I would guess that with only 2GB of RAM it's not worth upgrading to Vista just for DX10, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I run pretty much everything at max settings under DX9 smoothly, so I was curious if it was worth moving to DX10.

First: no, you can't really run DX10 in XP.

I run Vista with 2gb of RAM, and I'm quite happy with my performance. (I have the same video card, too)

That said, it would be kind of a giant fucking hassle to switch over to Vista now for the few additional effects that DX10 gets you, especially with Win7 right around the corner. There's also not that many games that use DX10 very frequently anyway, so you might want to look into whether the stuff you're playing is going to see any of the updates.

if you don't play these, or don't care about the little effects that DX10 adds to them, I don't think it would be worth it to change your OS.

You might as well wait for DX11. Win7 will have support for that, and video cards that support it should be just around the corner.

    Ah, the vicious upgrade cycle.

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

True, but if he gets Win7 his computer will run DX10 games just fine without any problems. So that way when DX11 finally comes to play then he can just buy a video card.

DX11 cards are out right now. IF you're looking to buy a new card right now, imo there's no reason not to pick up a DX11 card. ATi has 4 models that cover all the price points.

Nah, this machine is probably staying the way it is for a while, except for RAM if I find myself needing any (haven't so far). Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated
