Audio won't work/driver issue

Recently formatted and reinstalled Windows XP on my brothers computer for him. It's a Compaq, but the restore disc that the computer made wouldn't work, so I used a plain windows xp cd to install it. Now the computer won't put out sound, I've tried 2 different sets of speakers. Its onboard sound, so I don't know the name of the motherboard or what drivers to install.

Any ideas where to go from here?

Go to compaq.com and look up the model. What you need should be in the audio drivers section. Alternatively, since HP now owns Compaq, you can try the HP support site as well.

From there I downloaded the Realtek HD audio thing, but when I tried to install it it said I needed Microsoft UAA, so I downloaded and tried to install that but it came up with a "report" thing with "# 0" and then no real message.

Restarted the computer and it detected and set everything up.

    Thanks for the suggestion
