I've been catching up on some game design recently and I want to try out Flash. I've done loads of C/C++/Python/Java programming so I don't think learning the language will be an issue, but I'm confused on the software I need to build flash apps.
Is the $700 package really my only option? Nobody has made an open source equivalent? I saw that Adobe has a thirty day free trial - but I'd like a bit more time than that.
Any help would be appreciated.

Ever wonder how Adobe can give away things like flash players and PDF readers for fee? Congratulations, you just stumbled on their business model!

The open source equivalents are non-existent or just plain suck. You can try these
Anything open source is horrible. The closest thing would be SwishMax, which is terrible.
There really is no other solution, except if you've been to college sometimes the college software/book stores will have Adobe Suite for the 400-500 dollar range.
