I am thinking of buying one of them but i don't know which one to get. I am used to the playstation paddles. I know Xbox has Halo which is a plus for that. But I also want to use it as a computer in my bedroom. So which ever one is better at online. Just give me your reasons why you like one of them.
If you already have a large Playstation 2 and Playstation 1 collection, then if you can hunt down a Backwards Compatible Playstation 3, go for it. Otherwise, look at the games each has to offer and make your decison on that.
I'm not up to date on my PlayStation Network knowledge, but Xbox Live has often been considered the better system. Trouble is you have to pay for it. Free is good.
I personally prefer the 360 controller over the PS3 one as far as ergonomics goes, but they're both very similar. If you do decide to go for a 360, I don't think the controller will be an issue.
Having both, for me the 360 is just better. I like the controller more and the online experience is just plain better on the 360. Live Gold is well worth the price if you're into MP games.
That said, the PS3 does have some cool exclusive games. If you're missing Halo, PS3 has Killzone 2 that I think is equivalent to Halo(Story-wise I even prefer KZ).

Hello new person, welcome to the PA forum. I recommend you lurk around a bit and get a feel for the forum before jumping right to making a thread. We have plenty of PS3 and X360 associated threads around here that I think can suit your question better.
Hello new person, welcome to the PA forum. I recommend you lurk around a bit and get a feel for the forum before jumping right to making a thread. We have plenty of PS3 and X360 associated threads around here that I think can suit your question better.
None that really answer this question. People would be annoyed if others popped into a Borderlands PS3 thread and said "hey should I buy a PS3 or 360."
However this question does get asked all the time in various threads, but each person has different wants and needs from their console.
For this OP in particular I'd suggest PS3, I guess. Why is Halo a plus for the 360, have you played it before or are you just calling it a plus because it has brand recognition? Because there are games as good/better than Halo on the PS3.
The 360 is "better at online" but you have to pay for it.
Do you have any friends with one console or the other? Connectivity with people you know is probably important. from what I've seen the 360 may provide better connectivity with friends.
To copy what other people say, it all depends on what you want.
The PS3 is more of a multimedia system then a games console. You can surf the net, play bluray etc on top of playing games
But if you just want to game i'd go for a xbox360. I did, purely because 1. more games i wanted were coming out on the xbox360 and 2. i wasn't fussed by extra features of a PS3.
I went with the PS3 because I've always been a PS guy. Never had an original X-box so I had no hold over love for the titles. I'm also pretty hardcore on the PC gaming, and most X-Box exclusives wind up on PC eventually.
And so far I love my PS3, haven't had any problems nor a lack of games to play. Uncharted is just flat-out Awesome. And Heavy Rain looks jaw-dropping fantastic.
I won't have Alan Wake on console, but I think a PC port will be fine for it as I've spent enough money on my PC that a 360 port typically runs better so long as the port isn't exceptionally shitty.
I also watch a shit-ton of Blurays.
So all-in-all the PS3 was the better console fit for me for a bunch of reasons. Your best bet is to look at your play-style and the types and titles of games you want now and in the future and then decide. Anyone who flat out tells you that one console is inherently better than the other is full of crap and you should ignore them.
If you are thinking of using it as a bedroom computer, neither really do that. The PS3 has a web browser, and now the 360 has Facebook / Twitter / Last FM integration. So it kinda depends what you want to use it for. The PS3 can do all that through the web browser I guess.
If you are used to Playstation pads then great, personally I can't stand them.
If you have a decent TV, the PS3 Blue-ray capability would be a massive plus.
But as has been said, make a list of what games you want the most and go with whichever system has the most of them, or which system has the "best" version. Rockband, for example, 360 has a real edge there, and it's what I spend 50%+ of my game time on these days. And yeah Halo is fuckawesome, no other console shooter can touch it. Also Live > PSN unless you are morally opposed to paying for online, or a miserly skinflint. :P
You can install Linux on a non-slim PS3 and use that as a bedroom computer, but the memory is extremely limited by modern standards (256 MB). If you just work from command line that's okay, but I'm going to take a wild guess and say that's not what you're after.
Can someone tell me what about 360 online is superior to PS3? I've always wondered. I hear it all the time, but rarely here justification.
Can someone tell me what about 360 online is superior to PS3? I've always wondered. I hear it all the time, but rarely here justification.
Essentially the way friends lists and cross-game party support and voice-chat are implemented. Makes everything flow nicely, easy to use, especially with a group of buds at the weekend. That Facebook support is about to deepen this integration is something to consider.
As others have said, make a list of the games that are out and upcoming that you want to play, and see which console has more titles. If you really want Halo, go with the 360.
If you want to use it as a computer, the older, non-slim PS3s allow you to load a crippled version of linux on them(check google for more details), but if you really want a bedroom computer you should probably look into a cheap laptop.

Can someone tell me what about 360 online is superior to PS3? I've always wondered. I hear it all the time, but rarely here justification.
PS3 linux is perfectly usable as long as you're not using it for games
(Sorry, just had to get that in there as people are calling it crippled. It's no more crippled, really, than a fairly low powered Netbook. It's fine providing you're not wanting to play games)
I prefer my PS3 to my 360, for no real reason. It just has the games I prefer BUT I've got both and the 360 online does have some snazzier features:
- Better game invite system
- Group Chat (Outside of a game)
- Friend of Friend lists (Means you can have a meta list, ie for Forza there's a PA forum gamertag set up that has everyone added on it as a friend. That means people can just add that one list, browse to it's friends and see who's online for Forza)
- I personally think the voice chat is better quality than the PS3
It's generally a bit more accomplished. When it comes to the store though, rather than online gaming, I much prefer the PSN. I also prefer the PSN interface. Being I don't use my 360 THAT often I find the profile system it uses really intrusive. When I boot up a game it yells at me to sign in on a profile, then it asks me if I want to save my game, then it asks me which storage device I want to use (I only have one). The PS3 seems a little slicker in this department, that's just me though.
Anyway, if you're after using it as a computer... why not shell out for a decent PC? Cheaper games, free online, loads of indie stuff.
If you're set on a console then, if you want to use it as a PC, go for a fat PS3. As mentioned above you can install linux, however the 256mb ram isn't as limited as it sounds and you can use a 4gb (or more) usb storage stick as a swap file to extend this further. There have also been considerable steps forward for PS3 linux, you can now essentially use one of the cores as a GPU.
Providing you're "reasonably" tech savvie then the PS3 can be used as an excellent PC, comparable to some low end laptops.
I went with the PS3 after looking at all the games available for both platforms. None of the exclusives on the X360 really interested me at all (Gears of War, Mass Effect, etc all available on the PC), while the PS3 had a ton of awesome exclusives, plus plenty of great multiplatform games.
Since making the purchase, I keep falling more and more in love with my PS3. Uncharted 2 is unbelievably great, and I started using some of the multimedia features lately like the DLNA video streaming and Blu-Ray.
Try picking one with the games you want on it? Personally I'll buy the console after I find a game/games I want to play. I wouldn't buy a console then wonder what games to buy on it.
I have both and I play both regularly. Computer wise ps3 is easily comes the closest functionality wise but xbox is changing things around all the time. I'm sure they will release an internet browser or something like that sooner or later.
The multiplayer on 360 is leagues ahead of the ps3 so I play any games I know my friends are going to have as well on there. The online experience is much more advanced from downloading content(movies, music, games), to just connecting with your friends. Plus there is the achievement system which MUST be mentioned and unless I missed it hasn't been yet. You don't understand achievements untill you get your first one and you look up your friend who doesn't have it.... Instant bragging rights.
My Ps3 is more of a multimedia station, and omgwtfbbq blue ray player. I have tons of music on there I just throw on whenever or watch movies anytime. And when good ps3 games come out, they are fucking great. One recent example, Uncharted 2.. amirite? The online isn't terrible, just not as advanced as the 360 because they don't get paid to put it up there. But it works just fine, and they are still working on it as well(new upgrade with cross-game voice chat coming soon).
Personally I don't think you can really base a console choice on what games you want to play. Because there are too many that have already come out that you probably want to play and will never get around to playing... And new games come out ALL the time. Sequels are ported or put on to both systems so i don't find it that big of a deal if you can't play one game, usually there are replacements anyways(someone mentioned Killzone instead of Halo). Not a replica but an fps is an fps when it comes down to headshots.
Controller wise I'll lean towards the 360 controller. The staggered joysticks are just so much more comfortable on your hands, and they nailed it with dreamcast style concave triggers. The ps3's are so light they feel like you could drop them and they would shatter but they are actually quite durable(mine have been thrown in frustration a couple times). But putting the joysticks close together like that makes your hands feel cramped after a bit I find and I don't have big hands... . And wtf @ the bubble style r2/l2 buttons that they decided to cut the bottom out to turn into triggers. Shittsss weak. After writing that I realize ps3 controllers aren't as good as 360 controllers at all haha they need a revamp for sure. Nicer d-pad maybe
Anyways my suggestion is look at both, see which one fits your needs better, remember to look at reliability as well. I can't remember the return/broken rate for 360's and am too lazy to look it up but i remember it being over 50 percent.
Want to load it up with games and movies? Ps3. My friend just bought a Terabyte external HD, filled it up with movies, and hooked it up to his ps3. Or want the best online experience ever? 360. Step one, power button. Step two, friends list. Step three, choose friend. Step four, join session in progress.

You really cant go wrong with buying one over the other.
Just look at the exclusive titles and see what tickle you fancy. Or, just get both.
The multiplayer on 360 is leagues ahead of the ps3 ...
Plus there is the achievement system which MUST be mentioned and unless I missed it hasn't been yet. You don't understand achievements untill you get your first one and you look up your friend who doesn't have it.... Instant bragging rights.
I guess no one mentioned it because the PS3 has Trophies, which are the exact same thing.
Trophies aren't as good as achievements, sony was jealous of MS's achievement system and made a makeshift one.
They weren't jealous, they saw it was a good idea and copied it. And they're identical, in fact cross platform games have exactly the same achievements/trophies. There's really no difference.
Oh and to the op, if budget comes in to it then over here in the UK the 360 is still cheaper but the PS3 is now pretty close.
they saw it was a good idea and copied it. And they're identical, in fact cross platform games have exactly the same achievements/trophies. There's really no difference.
Ok maybe they weren't jealous, but they envied MS for their achievement idea.
And you're right trophies are the same I just do more online things on my 360 so I don't really compare trophies with my ps3 friends or even look at them ever really. Takes too long to for them to load up when I do want to look at them anyways.
PS3. Both systems have exclusives, but the pile of games I have that are exclusive to the PS3 have trumped anything I've seen on the XBOX360. The major titles are going to be multiplatform (Assassins Creed, CoD) or will also end up on PC (Mass Effect, etc.)
I also use my PS3 for streaming videos from my computer more than I use my XBOX360 (although the XBOX seems faster in "finding" the content). If I had to choose, I'd definitely choose the PS3 as it consistently has those non-FPS exclusives that seem to be focused on "content" over anything else.
- Friend of Friend lists (Means you can have a meta list, ie for Forza there's a PA forum gamertag set up that has everyone added on it as a friend. That means people can just add that one list, browse to it's friends and see who's online for Forza)
i really wish sony would get around to copying this feature.
Like others have said, go with the one more of your friends have. The libraries have a lot of crossover, an regardless of the game you'll tend to have more fun if you're playing with people you know.
Otherwise, it's all about the games, though if you want something specifically with a browser the PS3 is your hing. And don't forget to look at XBLA and PSN titles; the majority of my 360 collection is XBLA games, and there are tons of exclusives there on both sides that tend to get glossed over during larger console comparisons.
As a lot of people have said, though, you can't go wrong with either one. I chose the 360 back when the PS3 was $LOL, and I've loved it, but now that the two are a lot closer in price I don't know which one I would have picked, either.
I'm probably getting a 360 this weekend myself, as I already have the $150 TE 360 stick for Street Fighter 4 which I currently play on PC.
Also, the game my wife wants to play is gonna be on both anyway (FF13), and I want the maximum amount of people to play with/against online.
My main concern is making sure I get a new unit based on the Jasper board, which RROD's less.

Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.
The multiplayer on 360 is leagues ahead of the ps3 ...

Honestly, neither game score nor trophies should really be a major factor in your decision.
That being said, the Trophy System is (at present) still pretty obviously inferior to the Gamer Score system. A lot of early PS3 games are not included.
It is, however, a minor thing. More pressingly, XBL and XBLA are most considerably more robust than their PS3 counterparts (honestly, does anyone actually enjoy 'Home'?), but do involve a fee (either purchase time beforehand, which is much cheaper, or pay a monthly fee). Individual PS3 costs for arcade games are, I've been told, slightly higher, but you can pay directly, I think.
I would recommend going with what your friends have as well. I know two people who own PS3s, as well as myself (I knew one more, but regretably, the BR drive died on his, and it's still just an expensive paperweight that can access the internet, so I don't count it). I know more than twice that many who own Xbox 360s, off the top of my head (though not all of them are on XBL Gold). So, it's not too surprising that 90% of my time and money goes to my Xbox 360 instead.
