The camera grinds and clicks by design. It's normal, he shouldn't worry. It's one of the few actually focusing camera phones, so people aren't used to it yet... but physically focusing a small lens like that is noisy, yes.
Is there a way to make the volume buttons reverse when the phone is in landscape mode? It's kinda annoying to press the button right and then watch the volume indicator move left and vice versa.
The only thing left on the Droid that I really want is there to be a character count in messaging. I've tried ChompSMS and Handcent SMS but I really just enjoy the default looks and I couldn't seem to figure out if either of them can be changed to just about default except the character count.

I see people mention this a lot, which is funny because, apparently you never get close to the 160 character limit. The counter is there. It just doesn't bother taking up space until you get within 10 character of the limit. Then it shows up, and will tell you how many texts you'll need to send once you go over the limit.
Of course, Verizon still doesn't handle sending multiple texts automatically... but the counter is there people.
So I figured I should ask this question here before I make the trip to my local store to ask them:
I'm on a family plan. My line isn't eligible for an upgrade for another year and a half, but my brother's is and he doesn't really want to upgrade. We've done it before where we upgrade one line and then just swap it around later and it works perfectly. My concern here is that the data plan is requisite with the purchase. Can I have them add the data plan to my line and upgrade the eligible line, then transfer the phone over later?

It should. I'm about to call and double check though, because that's a good question (I have/did the same situation with my droid)

Yes, absolutely, that's what happened to me. I used my mother's upgrade credit and added the data plan for my line only, since I wouldn't be eligible to upgrade until July.

There is a system in place that manages alternate line upgrades like this automatically. You don't have to worry about a thing if you're doing this in store.

How do you get a created map onto the maps app, like the map in my sig? Or onto the phone in general?
EDIT: Found it, Google has a My Maps Editor in AM.

I am pretty sure I can send multi texts. Basically the counter will pop up when I am within 10 characters and if I keep typing it will stay up and count down as I go. ie 156/2 for the second message. Not sure if it is actually sending two texts or converting, but friends have not been confused when I do this so I am assuming it is working.

Not when sending to AT&T, unless it varies by region. I've tested this many times with my girlfriend, who's on AT&T. Every time, she gets the first 160 characters, nothing else. And I get an annoying, immediate text from VZW stating that only the first 160 characters were sent due to the 160 character limit when sending out of network.
So no, it doesn't work. I am in the process of getting my GF to switch to VZW, because this network is too damn stable, widespread, and awesome in other ways to ragequit. ;P
Top when you send a text over 160 characters on a phone running Verizon's shitty OS it actually converts it to a special type of MMS message or some bullshit, which is why it's incompatible with other carriers. Android splits messages via its own hoodoo, even on Sprint Android does that.

Why doesn't this work for me, then? When sending an SMS over 160 to an AT&T phone, it does the same exact thing it did on my enV2: send the first 160 characters only, and then send me an automated SMS telling me about the limitation. I don't think any Android hoodoo is going on, here. Maybe Verizon forced Moto/Google to use their crap implementation, or something, but I assure you that it's "crappy business as usual," in terms of sending SMSs over 160 to AT&T on the Droid.

Really guys, I wish I weren't right.
That is weird to hear because I have had no problems doing it. Maybe it is because I am sending to people on verizon? With my old LG if I sent over 160 I would just get a text back saying I was over the limit regardless of carrier.

I sent one today, and got back a message from Verizon saying messages sent to "non-VZW customers with graphics/tones/formatting and/or 160+ characters are sent as plain text with only the first 160 characters."

Yep, that's the one. I assume it works within VZW, but I guess I don't actually know. The only friends to whom I send long texts are on AT&T, worse luck. :P
So I sent a text of over 160 characters from my Sprint Hero through both chompsms and default messaging to a VZW Rogue and a Sprint Blackberry Curve. Both received it as a split message, one text right after the other. This should work exactly the same with a Droid or Eris.

I don't understand why people don't understand this. It doesn't. Not when sending to AT&T from Verizon, on a Droid. I am a first-party witness. Want me to send one right now and quote the exact error SMS that gets sent from VZW's system when anyone tries?

I am happy your carrier is sane. Mine is not.
Well, just tried it. It indeed does not work. Leave it to Verizon to fuck up Android.
When I mount my SD card as a USB drive, Win7 says there might be problems with it and offers to fix things. Should I let it? I don't notice anything wrong with it on the phone, aside from the odd reboot.

Profile -> Signature Settings -> Hide signatures always. Then you don't have to read this worthless text anymore.

It might be corrupted in some way... i'd say backup everything on it then let Win7 do its thing. At the very least if something goes wrong you can just format the sucker and put everything back on there.
Hey y'all, exciting news. I'd tried Handcent SMS a little bit ago, wanting some of its features (pop-up, customization, etc), but it was still pretty unstable on the Droid/Android 2.0.
I just gave it another try and, not only is it stable and wonderful in every way (although it took me an hour to make it look classy and non-teenager), but it has a setting called "Split 160" with a subheading pointing out that it's for Verizon users. Guess what it does. Guess, damn you.
Yeah. It autosplits texts over 160, just like should happen by default. I've tested it out sending to AT&T. Bless the fucking lord, it works. This just rocketed to the top of my favorite Android applications list. Must-have for any Verizon Android user.
Here's the right version, in case it's listed multiple times on the market:
I tried plugging my droid into my into my gamestop USB car adapter. I got no power. It worked fine for charging my iPod and my PSP, but the droid get's no love. Anyone else use a charger like that, that actually works?

Moto devices only seem to like Moto power cords, it is a slight handicap.

It's not specific to the Droid, so you'd be better off reading/asking in the Android thread.

Maybe ask in the GV thread. I scored my invite from there. Still haven't received any to give out, though.
