New York City Lodging

I'm thinking about heading up to NYC this weekend (Friday & Saturday) but don't want to pay a ton for a hotel room. Can anyone suggest some nice but inexpensive hotels in Manhattan?

Also, I was thinking about staying in Jersey City. What are my transportation options if I wanted to leave my car in Jersey City and take a train into NYC? Would that be cheaper than staying in Manhattan?

Stay in Manhattan. Costs more, but worth it.

For a hotel, I can repeat my recommendation from the last NYC hotel thread of the Hotel DaVinci at 244 West 56th Street.

It's been a few years since I was there, but it's pretty cool. Small, but who cares. Was about $60 for a queen and worth it. Clean, comfortable, cool black-marble bathrooms. Also on top of an old school italian place too, with a pretty nice bar. Within walking distance of the subway and central park.

Edit - just re-read this. DO NOT bring your car into Manhattan. Unless you're cool with spending god knows how much park it (I once got hit with $64 for ONE night at the New Yorker). Park elsewhere in a longterm lot and take public transportation there. I can't really suggest where to park -- bar once, every time I've been in NYC it was via bus or taxi -- but maybe someone else can.

Just checked. That hotel is booked.

That's a shame. I've got a couple more recommendations if you want them, but they're on the pricey side. Mostly places I've stayed on business.

I stayed at the Milford for NYCC and I liked it. It wasn't too expensive and it was like a 2 block walk from Times Square.

I'd suggest just taking the Amtrak, especially if you're coming from your location.

Stay in Stamford, CT - you can priceline a hotel for $50, then commute into the city. There's trains that run from 6 am to 1 am every day, and it's a 40 minute ride if you take the express train which leaves every hour. It may not be staying IN the city, but it's far too short notice to get a hotel, nevermind one at a reasonable price.

I ended up booking at the Best Western City View Inn in Long Island City. It got great reviews, it's cheap, and it's close to Manhattan via the subway.
