iPhone + new OS X install

Basically I was a fucking idiot and broke my laptop's hard drive, and so now I have a clean install of OS X ( >.> why didn't I use time machine and back up my shit grrr)
Anyway, so I didn't back up my stuff, but I have my iPhone

How do I get my iPhone's info back onto my computer, especially the address book contacts, and how do I hook it up without getting the iPhone erased?

Just hook it up, and when it asks you to sync, say no.

Then go to the tab dealing with contact sync, and turn it on and specify a location. You should then get it to give you the option to sync the data on the iPhone to your computer.

You should be able to do it via bluetooth. That's how I got my contacts on my Macbook from my Sony Ericsson.

Ok, got my contacts to sync right, so didn't lose that (phew)

I am having one issue with syncing... the backup is essentially stalling at one point
It's just not finishing
like 90% done and it stops
