Broken collarbone. How long will it keep a man down?

So the other other bartender at the restaurant broke his collarbone yesterday or today. This means I get to fill in for him while he's out. How long does something like usually keep someone down for? I'm just curious how long I'll be working extra shifts for approximately. What's the range of movement you lose with something like that generally?

EDIT: I just imagined him having to shake cocktails with that. Ow.

My best friend's 11 year old son had a clean break with his collarbone. The doctor told them it will remain immobilized for 6 weeks. And he's going to have to be careful with activity for another month or two afterwards.

So he could be out for a good long while? Well, more money for me.

It takes about 4-8 weeks to heal in a sling.

Also, sometimes you can have some reasonable range of motion, but it hurts like a bitch and you shouldn't move it. Basically he'll be one-armed 'till it's healed.

My friend broke his collarbone playing soccer last year. His arm was in a sling for 6 weeks. Since his job revolves around using his arms, he may end up trying to use it sooner than he should, though. I suppose he could reinjure it or slow down the healing process in doing so, though.

If your friend isn't careful he could break the collarbone again.

The correct thing to do if he wants to use his arm sooner than normal is to say to the doctor "Is there any way I can use my arm for x, y, and z?"

Once I broke my arm, and instead of a cast I managed to get a removable thing that still let me play piano an hour a day.
