Nvidia 3D Vision, purchase?

AnarchyAnarchy Registered User regular
I went to the Eurogamer Expo yesterday and I was blown away by the NVidia 3D Vision stand, at first I had assumed it was for specific games but the friendly rep informed me that theres a whole bunch of games that support it. I didn't know until yesterday that the 3D (Red/Blue) lenses that came with my graphics card could be used to try out the 3D stuff in my existing games (I highly suggest Torchlight, it looks fantastic in 3D) which I have been trying out today.

So now I'm considering a purchase, however, the main problem I'm having is justifying the purchase of the 120Hz monitor plus the kit itself which will total £350 ($600-700), since I already own two montiors which are still serving me well, plus a projector. So I'm wondering what experiences fellow PA's have had with this techonology and where you guys think its worth it?

Thanks for your help!

If you've got the money to waste and want to go with nvidia...

I personally suspect it's just another passing fad.

    Do you:
    • Have the money to spare.
    • Really want/need this 3d thing.

It really is impressive isn't it? Everything I've heard about it was incredibly positive.
But the price really is quite the wallet rape isn't it?

I would simply start putting some money aside and keep an eye out for a good deal on a 120hz monitor.
I image they'll eventually start coming down in price, and perhaps the glasses will as well.

    I have this.

It's awesome, but really is expensive. If you really have the money for the Monitor/glasses go for it.

Remember you really won't be able to use these on the new big releases unless you have a monster of a machine, since you're rendering a lot more information.

But FEAR2 was a whole new experience with these things. Also playing SF4 with the 3D effects is interesting. And I swear to god L4D is the best use for this technology.

As far as being 'worth it', I needed another monitor anyways so it worked out for me. If I was in your shoes it would be a much much harder sell, because the glasses are game dependent. When they work, they -WORK-. When they don't, they're -meh- at best.

Unfortunately there aren't any upcomming big games to look forward to that I think will work well with these glasses, aside from L4D2. That will be sexy.

I've got the latest iteration of the shutter glasses, and I LOVE games with them.
They don't help out my fps score much, but they do make the games look amazing. I normaly use a 30" monitor to game on, but I bought a 61" led dlp to use with these glasses, because you need to have a 120hz refresh if you go the steroscopic shutter route.

Is Crysis as absolutely mindblowing as I think it would be?

I just want to say I tried out Nvidia's 3d thing at PAX, and if I won the lottery that would be the very first thing I would buy.

The truth is I do have some money to play about with so I think I'm going to put an order in for it. I'll let you know how they pan out.

    Thanks for your suggestions everyone.

I don't think there was too much the 3d goggles added to that game. Most of the effects didn't work with the goggles.

Painkiller, FEAR, all the Source engine games, Mirror's Edge went from awesome to amazing though.

Also WoW is the only game that supports depth out of the screen. When I played my character's halberd would constantly poke me in the nose.
