Guitar Hero II trouble (UPDATE)

I got a copy of Guitar Hero II about a week after launch and have played the holy crap out of it since. Anyways, some time during the evening while playing co-op mode the game started to freeze up during mid-song. Some times it would freeze up, then continue onward, only the music is off sync with the notes, other times it would just flat out freeze entirely. I checked the back of the disc to see if there were any scratches, but only found a few, and they hardly looked like they caused the problem.

Flash forward another week: I had purchased another copy three days prior to this one, and was playing it again when (you guessed it) the game started acting up again. I checked the back of the disc to discover that this time it was completely unscathed, which irks me even more so than the last time.

I'm not sure if this is the software's fault or the ps2's: every other game I play on the system works beautifully, and it's not terribly old. My question on this matter; what can I do to fix this? Has anyone with Harmonix's game experienced something like this? Another thing to note is that the first Guitar Hero works great, and that thing is scratched to hell and back.

Any help is appreciated here.

as with most problems, eliminate the variables

try everything the same with another PS2; find out where the problem lies

I'll do that for sure, but in the mean time since I don't have access to another ps2, what else can I do?

Again, it only does it with this game, and when it freezes up so to speak, it doesn't completely freeze up. The characters on screen still move around slightly and when you press the chord buttons they still light up on screen. This to me seems like something beyond hardware and more of a software issue.

Okay, so I was able to test the game at my friends house the other day and came up with some interesting results.

First things first, I put the game in my PS2 and started playing a song like normal, and as usual it froze up. However, this was just to illustrate the problem that i've been having with my system before moving on to the first test subject.

We first use his original PS2 model (the "fattie" one), and while it made it a good three-quarters through the song, it froze up just like it did on my system, then started up again with the music and notes out of sync. Unexpected, but it's the same model as mine, and does make sense.

Moving on, we then try the game out on his little brother's slim PS2, where it worked for quite some time until it froze up yet again. I checked the back of the disc to make sure that there were no scratches on it; there weren't any.

About twenty minutes ago I called my friend Trevor up to see if he wanted to do something today, and somewhere alongst the line the subject of Guitar Hero II showed up. When I told him my situation, he responded that his game had done the EXACT same thing as mine roughly about a week ago (he doesn't play the game much you see).

I have concluded that this is in fact a software issue and not my Playstation 2's fault. So now that i've done some research on this matter, I ask the community; now what? How in the world am I gonna fix this problem?

If anyone can relate, please tell me your tactics on addression the matter at hand. It would be a big help.

I played Guitar Hero 2 for about 13 hours straight just last week. And I played it for a good hour and a half with this girl about 2 days ago.

    I havn't had any problems.

Is the problem similar to that?

If so, it seems there was a bad pressing with a batch of the GH2 games. You'll pretty much have to return the game until you find a working copy of it.

It's the help thread, it's a lot of muck to go through, and I browsed it (It's where I got the ideas, though I only got a few pages in, no real time to read it all).

    Good Luck!
