Roaming Outlook with Roaming Profiles

The specification:

Roaming profiles, such that when a user logs into any machine in the office, the can immediately open up outlook, have their emails and email accounts set up and waiting for them. Exchange 2007 SP2 and Outlook 2007 are in use, each user has an Exchange mailbox and an email account provided by GoogleApps which they use for communicating with and while in the outside world.

The current behaviour:

The log in, their desktop and windows profile settings follow them around, but they open outlook and enjoy going through set up outlook profiles set up anew, they find this confusing. They inevitably have forgotten their gmail password and I get to reset it. Currently redirected using Group Policy is everything except the start menu.

The ugly:

Until recently, everyone except me stayed where I put them, however we've an influx of new employees and are enjoying hot desking and other fun. This has now become an issue which is more annoying to live with than solve, and thus I'm able to devote extra time to solving this (overworked IT staff in a small companies = fun!).

I recognise that even form this simple run down, there are a few less than ideal set ups (i.e. individual external smtp and outlook combines to be a vastly less managable mess), but there's more stuff behind that. I inherited a rather messy infrastructure and it's baby steps in terms of improvements, plus the main thrust of my position is external consultation, the IT admin part what I do in downtime, so progresses are slow.

Point me in the right direction plz?

I find this confusing. Outlook profile = registry = part of roaming profile. Either something isn't configured correctly or you don't have the setup you think you have. Are there any MSP files in the Office install dir?

You know in horror movies, that part when you hear the music change? Just before they decide to check out the chainsaw noises in the basement and everything goes to shit?

You should be able to do a custom install of Office / Outlook to do most of the configuration for them (like which server, view, etc). Unfortuantly, each user will probably still have to do a username/password entry for their specific account because that will be different for each person.

I have succeeded in fixing the roaming profiles part. You were correct PJ, there wasn't roaming just redirections implemented. Which explains a few thing. Now onto the outlook initial configuration part.

As an ex-NT4-admin, roaming profiles haunt my dreams. They are hateful things born of twisted evil and not to be used, well, ever.

This might be of use on the mail config https://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=148484.
