For an university project we're doing a short film, only about six minutes long. We have a scene where a character is supposed to have a really bad cough. The person who is supposed to be coughing can't fake it well enough.
Is there some sort of way that is harmless to make her have an intense, horrible cough for like two minutes? She suggested she bring in pepper and throw it down her throat but maybe there's some movie tricks that would be more useful than eating packets of pepper.
I very recently managed to mistakenly 'breathe in' some tabasco sauce. I coughed like mad for a few minutes.
Assuming that this person has no allergies, I would suggest something like a few drops of tabasco - if she can sort of inhale it to the back of her throat, it start a cough going.
I don't know of any movie stuff that could help, but I'd second your first idea of using condiments to get the effect.
The other option if you are making a film is to download a soundbyte of a female coughing and edit it into your video. Just have the actor make the motions like she is coughing? Dunno how good that might look.
Drink plenty of water to refresh your throat, breath deeply, harden your stomach, cough.
Looks like this person is a bad actor who can't act.

Hear my warnings, unbelievers. We have raised altars in this land so that we may sacrifice you to our gods. There is no hope in opposing the inevitable. Put down your arms, unbelievers, and bow before the forces of Chaos!

Yeah, she kind of is. This is technically a writing class, but we're taking things we've learned from the stages of progression of plot in film to apply them to our own movie. It's pretty dumb.
Oh, and also, this is someone who just 'drank poison', so we need as phleghmy and horrible a cough as possible

Eating/breathing in something like hot sauce is going to be your best bet, I think - maybe something habanero-based if tabasco doesn't do the trick, depending on the person's tolerance for that sort of thing.
Go for a run outside. Or tell her to run around the room until she's out of breath, and then tell her to cough. If she's out of breath, the lack of saliva in the mouth sort of builds up that phlegm, and will result in a more convincing cough.
I ... uh ... hear there's other things that should make someone cough pretty heartily, that given the qualifier of "university film students" should be on-hand and probably already lit up. But yeah, taking a drag on something like that should be sufficient.
That is for a while anyways. Two minutes of stage coughing is going to hurt, two minutes of real coughing caused by an irritant and she may well serve up some chowder.

This thread delivers the funny. You better post the video for us afterward so we can see what a mace/pepper/tabasco sauce milk-shake looks like on the way back up.
I'm trying to understand how someone can't fake a cough, but I can't. Then again, I have allergies all year, so I never have to fake it.
Even a "bad cough" is intermittent, though - sustained bursts, and then none for a bit, followed by some more coughing. Two minutes straight is enough to crack a rib. No joke - if I cough for more than five seconds straight from an actual irritant, it feels like my ribs are going to jump out of my torso.

Well, from what I understand, she's looking for a particular phlegmy, sickly nasty cough, which one really can't do under normal circumstances.
I second what Mully says. Have her drink milk, and run around a bit, and you should be good.
She could always take a decongestant/expectorant cough medicine. That way it won't have to be fake phlegm either, she can hack up all kinds of yellow-green goodness!
Seriously, just tell her to bone up on the acting. Or think of a different way to indicate she's been poisoned. Maybe violent abdominal cramping instead, and a little stage vomit for good measure.

If you want a really terrible cough, get some of that unsweetened Kool-aid powder and have her swallow it. Of course, then she'll be retching food dye.
...you know, it's probably a bad idea to have her inhale anything irritating. She could actually get it into her lungs and cause some real problems.
Just have her get some expectorant (Robitussin or something similar) syrup and some milk, like other have said.
So I gave her a list of suggestions from here to check out. She ended up coming to class with five of those large individual milk containers, chugged them all in rapid sucession, and then ran until she was out of breath.
When it came time for her scene she threw up, and it looks fantastic for our purposes.
Thanks guys! You can consider this solved.

I encouraged none of this behavior. She did this independently after reading the list of various suggestions offered in this thread. Her reasoning was that combining the two most pleasant sounding methods would work much better than doing just one.

This has to be the best H/A thread resolution ever. Someone chugged a bunch of milk and then ran until she threw up and people are being thanked for recommending it.

Good two minutes of coughing guaranteed.
It's worked for me...unintentionally.
Check out my art! Buy some prints!
So a few minutes of hard fake coughing, running around breathing hard, some tabasco or hot pepper will probably do the trick
I've found a really sugary drink works great for generating phlem

Do not do this.

Hey guess what, that's exactly what I did! There's even a video of it somewhere!
EDIT: The first one, I mean. It was horrifying
