Vision issue...help?

I'm having a really wierd problem that just really started happening. I work in a corporate environment where I sit in front of a monitor all day. I was walking back from another area and I think I may have looked outside. All of a sudden, it was like I looked into the sun or saw a bright reflection off a car window. Now my right eye has some weird flickering lines through it. Usually, catching bits of the sun in reflections or even accidentally glancing at it doesn't affect me this long - wtf could have happened?

[note] I didn't ACTUALLY look at the sun OR get a reflection off of something...

I've had this happen. Not sure what it's called, but it goes away after a while. I usually just rest or close my eyes for a few minutes.

Any pain or blurriness? Either way, my instinctive response to "flickering vision in my eye" is "retinal detachment."

Yes, that means you need to get to a fucking doctor, like, now.

Apparently Slider can heal his retinas just by resting his eyes. That's some superpower there.

If there is no pain it could be a ophthalmic migrane, other wise if it is painful then it could be a visual migrane.

I get them from time to time have had one last as long as 15 minutes.

He didn't mention pain. It's going from a mild, synthetic environment to a sudden bright environment. Your eyes can get messed up if they don't have proper time to adjust.

I've also had this happen when I get migranes, but it's slightly different.

Seems to have gone away, but it definitely felt like my eyes were working harder. My granddad had retinal detachment happen a few years ago so I guess it's in the medical history, a likelihood, but I didn't figure on it happening this early.

Also, never had a migraine, nor really any severe headaches. Only occasionally will I feel a vague headache.

Might want to schedule an appointment with the eye doc to have yourself checked out.

Slider lives in an RPG perhaps, where all wounds are healed by paying 10 gold and sleeping in a bed? :P

I work in an office environment too, and I've never had flickering or spotty vision going outside into blinding sunlight. I squint for a second until my pupils constrict to pinholes, but never "flickering lines" which is what made me go whoa wtf there.

Augh I just typed out a huge big thing and then it didn't go through. HERE WE GO AGAIN.

Okay, first of all, yes, go to a doctor, be referred to an eye specialist and have them test for Retinal Detatchment. Important.

However, what you get sounds like what I get. I started getting them (Ocular Migraines) at age 21. Started just as you described here, though mine turned into what I would describe as water running down a window -- but the water is mercury.

I started with getting 2 in 2 years. Then suddenly I had 3 in one year. Now I have between 8 & 14 a year. Mine last anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 hours, and make me completely useless as I can't see around the blur, and I get nauseous (to the point of vomiting) if I try to navigate around too much.

So, keep a journal of yours. Yes, this is your first one but they might keep coming, so just keep a note somewhere. Document them. After a year, if you have more than one, take your journal back to your doctor and have her write a note for you restating what your journal says.

Employers do NOT understand what this is, as it is a completely invisible (to others) issue, and it is not painful. Despite these facts, it renders you incapable of working unless you're a professional feeler of some kind.

If you want to talk about it at all, feel free to PM me. They're scary, but you get used to it.

I get the same thing you are experiencing, from time to time, usually when I have just finished doing some sort of vigorous exercise. It starts in one eye, and everything is shiny from that eye, I can't see past it. It is not at all painful, and goes away in time, though usually it lasts for about a half hour to an hour. I had always equated it to my blood pumping really fast or something non-scary like that!

Ocular migraines? No they don't, that's what I was told I have, and they have no pain whatsoever.
Did my doctor misdiagnose or give me the wrong terminology?

See, when I used to get ocular migraines I would have no pain at all, but essentially lose about half of my vision due to flashing lights and blind spots. Only thing that would bring it back was to go to sleep for a while in a nice dark room.

If the visual distortion spreads across both eyes, it's probably just a migraine headache with aura.
Generally "true ocular migraines" are one-sided only and come with the aforementioned demon-dong.

I'm experiencing basically what Mully, underdonk, and Forkes are describing. No pain coinciding with the vision blockage, but I'm literally unable to see past it - my depth perception took a sharp drop and I nearly tripped walking in a straight line.

I have United HealthCare but I'm not sure if its a HMO or PPO (have the option here). Our benefits are open for enrollment right now - should I switch to one or the other? I know one basic difference is that one plan lets you choose who to see willy-nilly and the other means you have to see a general practitioner who then refers you to specialists.

It's possible that you're confusing ocular migraine with migraines with auras. Some migraine sufferers experience visual symptoms (aura) that immediately precede the onset of a standard, painful migraine.

An ocular migraine is very frequently painless, and usually consists of just visual symptoms like those being described by some of the people here.

    so ... i don't know
though i guess it sounds like the OP had a 'true ocular migraine', if what you're saying is true

Or I'm just using the definition wrong, as many people have come to do.

In some cases, "ocular migraine" describes a migraine aura that involves your vision. Migraine auras include a variety of sensations — often visual, but which also may include other sensations, such as numbness — that precede or accompany a migraine. Aura can sometimes occur without an associated headache.

Sensitivity to nitrites/nitrates/sulfites perhaps? You get the same reaction when you eat other processed meats, or drink red wine?

I don't drink red wine or eat other processed meats, so I don't know, haha. I avoid hot dogs though! (Despite my love of them.)

For me, it's just like the OP - corporate environment, screen all day, looking away from the screen, suddenly, SNAP. Blindness.

Seriously though OP, despite everyone saying it's just an aura or whatever, you NEED to go have your retinas examined. That's painless too, and eye exams are fun!

Thanks for that, and I have, earlier this year. It was a general exam, and they even used a really cool big camera machine to snap a pic of my eyeball. I'll make another appointment for Friday, my next day off. I have no sick time left this year :-/

Retinal detachment as I understand it either happens or it doesn't, the condition isn't something that is fixed without intervention. So the up shot is your retina is still attached for the time being, since your vision went back to being normal.

I've never had visual illusions or anything like that but I've done long stints of data entry for a living before and I can say that going from a cubicle to the outdoors does sort of emphasize just how strained your eyes are and how used to only being in an environment in which everything is only a few feet away they are. If there's a window that you can see from your workstation (maybe there are squirrels outside and you can pretend they're married) just give it a glance of a minute or two every so often and try to focus on a distant object. For me it's some tiny spinning contraption on an A/C unit on the building across from mine's roof.
