So no thread for this? For shame G&T. (or maybe my search skills are bad )
So Gratuitous Space Battles is a game about gratuitous space battles. In it you will build gratuitous space ships, place them in to gratuitous space fleets which you will then launch in to gratuitous space battle!
So far I am finding this game to be somewhere along the lines of super rad but that may be because I have been following it for a while on the dudes blog. Anyone else playing?
I've been playing it for a month or so now after seeing Tycho briefly mention it in passing on the front page. It's fun but doesn't really have a lot of content, once you've played through the dozen or so missions and unlocked everything, there's really nothing left but the player created challenges. People on the official forum somehow seem to see a lot more depth in the ship design and deployment than is apparent to me, you can blow through most of the missions with just a few cruisers and as many fighters as you can deploy.

I'm loving the game so far, when I can tear myself away from Torchlight and Dragon Age. Turning the difficulty up turns it into a completely different game. If you like to micromanage, you'll love this game. I've spent a ton of time just building different ship roles and testing them out. I made some EMP and Missle frigates that I thought were going to be awesome. Started the battle up, and then remembered that they didn't have engines. Oops.
I haven't tried the multiplayer out yet, but it looks like it will function similair to the old play-by-email turn based games.
Oh, and don't get this confused with an RTS like Homeworld 2. In GSB, you build your ships and deploy them on the map screen, and set behaviors for them. Then you push play and watch what happens. You don't have any direct control in the battles. That might be a turn off for a lot of players, so check the demo before you buy.
It's pretty cool, although I know when I was playing the pre-release versions there were times I was not entirely pleased with the AI in battles. I chalk some of that up to just being lazy with the pre battle orders and whatnot, but it is a fun little time waster for what it is.
Yeah I gotta say with my experience so far it has really outshone my expectations. I am finding myself able to get fairly deep in to my battle plans and get carried away with finding that missing element from my fleet. I am also pleasantly surprised with how challenging it is. I was worried I would be able to breeze through the main missions in a few hours.
Also I gotta agree with Hensler. You can get so lost trying to make your lynch-pin ship that you can forget the bigger picture. Which really serves to make the battle better in that watching a train wreck sort of way
I been playing this, really fun. The gripping sensation when you watch your last cruiser power down two other cruisers on the point of near death is fun.
Then get awarded only a measly 20 credits cos you wasted so much money on inferior tactics.
You guys should check out the forums, loads of mods on there. The game is very easily editable.
I was just thinking I needed a game with the possibility of designing some spaceships when Steam reminded me that this exists. Sounds perfect and am downloading the demo now.
Is there any reason not to get the steam version?

After playing around a bit with the demo, I've had a glorious vision of MOO III finally being made (SHUT UP!) and having something like this battle system (maybe a bit simplified) with both hardware and allowable tactics being determined by which techs you have discovered.

So, in the sense that you build minions and set them loose in a simulation . . . this sounds like something that would appeal to programmer types. Right? Anybody of the coder persuasion play this game and find it to be huge fun?

This doesn't actually look anything remotely like what I do as a programmer. Not any more than playing with LEGO bricks or building RC cars does. It seems like it would be less fun because you don't have any direct interaction in the battles.

This is not a bad thing.

To be fair, I think a single game CD would be capable of choking a rhino.
