So, I'm trying to get together a birthday present for my girlfriend. One of my ideas is to get a reasonably good quality satellite image of her hometown and then have it framed. Problem is, I'm at a bit of a loss where to find satellite images other than google earth, which I don't think is high quality enough. It doesn't have to be incredibly high resolution--The longest dimension of the image would represent 6000 feet, and I need to compress that down to maybe 24-30 inches.
Any ideas? The alternative is just a framed picture of us which is a little more plain. Also she hates pictures of herself, so maybe that's not much of an alternative at all.
If you mean you want imagery for free, then I don't know. I googled "free high res satellite imagery" and the first link I hit was a website called Terraserver that looks like it will let you zoom in and print imagery, or you can even order prints from it. Might be worth looking at..? You can select a few different 'types' of map, and the prices seem to start from around $14 or so... I'd suggest just go and have a look at that site and see what they can offer you.
Jeez, I don't know how I missed that. I kept finding Digital Globe or whatever when I was searching, and that place sounds extremely expensive and aimed at commercial uses. Thanks! I'd still be interested to hear what others have to say, though.

you could try and remedy this with a little photoshop. take a photo of her and add/alter it to be a representation of how you see her (assuming, hopefully, you like what you see).
