Child's Play - Get your charity on, suckas.

Child's Play is go!

cp_nodate.gif

It's that time once again to show everyone how generous you horrible nerds can be.

If you are some kinda dumb person and don't know what the hell I'm talking about, Child's Play is a super awesome charity project that Penny Arcade started up back in 2003 to raise money and games and toys for the Seattle Children's Hospital. Since that time, it has grown into nothing less than a world-wide phenomenon, regularly raising over a million smackers in cash and prizes for kids stuck in hospitals around the globe. Not only do we raise huge amounts of donations, everything is absolutely 100% free of any kind of stupid admin fees. Everything goes straight to the kids.

CPNintendoDS.jpg
(actual piles of goodies for the kids, and that's just a small sample for one hostpital)

Just head on over to the OFFICIAL WEBSITE and choose how and to where you would like to donate some cool stuff for sick kids.

Oh, and there's this super awesome fancy charity dinner auction every year in December, where you dress up nice and pretend you are civilized human beings for an evening, spending lavishly on various nerd paraphernalia . This is serious business, folks. No shirt and jeans here, you damn slobs. I'm totally gonna go this year, finally, and rent a tux and everything.

Got my family to agree again that this year, I donate money to Childs Play instead of giving gifts.
(surprise for them though i will probably do both.)

I wish I would have been able to volunteer to come over to Seattle to help deliver the games and stuff the first year they did it. That would have been pretty fun.

They're donating what they make beyond recouping the cost to Child's Play.

I keep a change jar on my computer desk and every year when Child's Play begins I empty it all into a CoinStar and have it print an Amazon gift certificate(no counting fees for Amazon). It usually totals $70ish a year in addition to what I normally give.

Speaking of giving, I am going to split my donations between the local hospital (Boston Children's) and a hospital that probably doesn't recieve too much in a poorer area of the country. Anyone have suggestions for the later?

Giving a whole bunch of free awesome games to kids who really fucking need a good day? Ya, I could see that being pretty fun.

child's play raises such an intense amount of money, I gotta wonder what could be done if it was put towards research for cures and such rather than toys to entertain the kids

You're aware those toys make those kids live longer, if only by reducing their stress, right?

I don't mean to disparage the program. I know that it means a ton to the kids and their families. I was just musing on how big it's grown in such a short amount of time.

True, but it's still remarkably small compared to charities like Make-A-Wish and the like.

but that's what so good about child's play

there are hundreds of charities set up to fund study into medical research

but so few set up to make the kid with the disease any happier while he or she is sick

and the other thing is it's bigger bang for buck. $100 donated to the leukaemia foundation pays for like, 30 seconds of lab time or half a DNA test

but a hundred bucks to Childs play buys a DS that a sick kid gets to keep

Agree with you there. I'm donating to the hospital where my sister spent a lot of time when she was younger. Back then they had some blocks, books, and maybe some board games, but that's it.
Oh wow, the kids get to keep the systems? I thought they were up there and like handed out to kids in the wards. I donate either way, but that's neat.

yeah I'm pretty sure that big things like XBOXs and board games and such stay at the hospital for whoever to use

but they hand DSs out because each year they get like a thousand of them

Handhelds are gifts to children, consoles are ward gifts.

Why? It was yours to give away.
Not going to go this year, despite it being a great event:

    1 - No money
2 - Finals right after (same as last year). And this semester I really DO need to study. :S

A friend of mine personally attested that Child's Play has helped his family.

It added a dimension to the feeling I get knowing that, beside the industry and noforumers, our little corner of the internet helped make that possible.

Ooh man every time I see childs play mentioned it reminds me of in highschool (before childs play got started) when our class was collecting things for Childrens Hospital in Utah and everyone was getting donations and my group of 3 pooled together to buy them a gamecube and a few games. those nurses were so excited for the kids and serves as proof that I wasn't a complete waste of space as a teenager.

If I ever make it rich I am just dumping truckloads of money into this thing but since I probably won't I will settle for attending probably next year
