Gigantic Image Printing

Hey all!

I have a conundrum, it appears as though the map I have for my DnD group is fairly...large. Think 60"x60". I would like to print it off, whether it be at home or at Staples or some such. If I were to print it off at home, is there a program of some sort that would automatically divide the image into a bunch of 8 1/2" by 11" images? I was planning on doing that, then putting the small images together like a jigsaw puzzle. If that wouldn't work, would some sort of printing store be able to do it?

Thanks for all your help ahead of time.

Any image software stronger than Paint would be able to print across multiple pages. If you want one very large single piece, you need to go to a print store.

All right, I'll try and do so with Pixelmator. Thanks for your help.

When you are cutting the individual images to line it up, only cut off one edge and leave the edge on the other page so that you can over lap.
    I hope that makes sense.

The Rasterbator! The dirtiest sounding image dividing program ever! Awesome, free, and innuendo-heavy.

Lol, very good program, it does what I'm looking for, except for the dots part. If it was simply the image cut up onto many sheets, without the editing, that would be perfect. Thanks for your help though.

you can set how fine the resolution of the dots is, i think. it can use less ink/toner than just printing the image and it'll let you do a pretty fair job of blowing up a low-res picture if need be.

Yeah, setting it to a very fine dot size gives you great results. Larger dots are just an aesthetic (or ink saving) choice.

Ah, I tried that, it was still too low quality. The grid is barely discernible. Thanks for your help anyways.

If you do go with a print shop, be aware an image that size is probably going to run you somewhere around $100, especially if you do it in color.

O.o I'll just print it onto a bunch of regular sheets, then. XD

Yep. At the print shop I work at, anything larger than a 12x18 is priced by the square foot, and 60x60" is 25 square feet. Hell, I'm not sure we'd even be able to print that large. Our limit is 4 feet wide, I believe.

Hmm, so what you're saying is that the image is to large for even a print shop? Jeez, good choice on maps, eh?

My print shop, yeah, but others might have the ability to print up to five feet. If you do end up going that route, they should be able to tell you right up front how wide they can print.

Four feet seems to be pretty standard. Our place can do 4' wide but up to 100' long (though I can't imagine doing that on bond paper).
