I'm probably missing a few, and I'm sure there'd be more if Bakersfield would ever get a goddamn limited release.

A Scanner Darkly was pretty Meh.

    I oughtta see The Prestige.

It's a pretty damned slick film. Christian Bale ftw.

I liked The Illusionist better, probably because I have more of a hard-on for Ed Norton than Christian Bale.

It was OK. Aside from the usual "the book was better" complaint, you could add that they excised the most charming, unique parts of the book. Seriously, they chopped out about 1/2 the book, which is crazy, since it's actually pretty short.

Eugene Hütz, lead singer of Gogol Bordello (one of my favorite bands), was sublime as Alex, though. Absolutely perfect.

I want to see that movie simply because Eugene Hütz is in it, and despite Elijah Wood being in it.

Didn't the directors and whatnot get pissy at Hütz for going out every night, partying, and dj'ing too much during the filming of that flick? I think I remember reading that he showed up most mornings pretty damn hung over.

Absolutely not, I think the performances of both the deaf-mute and her father were great. I think the director was a little distanced from the Japanese characters, but overall the atmosphere was perfect.

The Japanese story is only as 'tacked-on' as the nanny's story.

Also, I posted the picture of the father because his was the first picture I found. I thought the Japanese sub-plot was pretty spectacular, as well, so it was a good fit.

They're both phenomenal actors; I just prefer a Welshman to duplicate an English accent rather than an American. Norton just came across as a little whiney to me. And I think the boner that I sport for Bale is probably more than necessary. Looking back at some of his performances, you can see that he can be a little cold on occaision. Then again, he has a habit of picking the parts that require him to be a bit cold. He still kicks ass, though.

Man, 2006 was a great year for movies. My Top 20-something, in alphabetical-ish order. * = movies I found technically great, + = movies I found the most entertaining.

    *13 Tzameti
    Been Rich All My Life
    +Borat
    +Casino Royale
    Children of Men
CSA: The Confederate States of America
    Dave Chappelle's Block Party
    The Departed
    L'Enfant
    Half Nelson
    The Illusionist
    Inside Man
    Jesus Camp
*The Last King of Scotland (Forest Whitaker was the best actor of 2006)
    +Little Miss Sunshine
    *Pan's Labyrinth
    Le Petit Lieutenant
    A Prairie Home Companion
    The Prestige
    The Queen
    Shakespeare Behind Bars
    +Wordplay

And Oldboy, which I will continue to put on my "Best of the Year" lists until such time as all matter in the universe is compressed into a softball-sized sphere.

I disagree. As far as heist films go, it was a gem. Well-framed, good concept, great cast, etc. But that's the fun of movies and art...they are almost entirely subjective.
